In the days of July, when the whole country turned to the heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect the Fatherland, we met Mr. Dang Van Ut, son of martyr Dang Cong Binh, and heard the touching story of a respected communist known as "King Binh".

The story of "King Binh" who once terrified his enemies

Mr. Dang Van Ut is 91 years old this year (currently living in Hoc Mon) but is still lucid and emotionally recounted: “When my father was executed by the enemy at the Hoc Mon theater shooting range, I was only 9 years old. My mother was so heartbroken that she did not dare to come to see my father off when he was executed, she did not even leave the house, just sat and cried. I witnessed that before he was shot, my father still shouted loudly: Long live the Indochinese Communist Party! Long live the success of the proletarian revolution! Nothing is more painful than seeing my father standing there. My father's heroic death left a deep impression on me. Later, my brothers and sisters and I were all in the army, protecting the Fatherland and repelling the enemy.”

Mr. Dang Cong Binh was born in 1907, in Tan Phu village, Hoc Mon district, Gia Dinh province (now Tan Phu Trung commune, Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City). During his lifetime, Martyr Dang Cong Binh had 4 children, of which the first daughter was a martyr who died in 1962 and the 2 sons who later joined the army to fight against the French colonialists and in 1954 gathered in the North to continue the resistance against the US until the day of independence and liberation of the country.

Born into a peasant family, young Dang Cong Binh had revolutionary consciousness from a very early age. Living and fighting with the ideal of expelling colonialists and liberating the country, he joined the uprising army in 1937 and was admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party in 1939.

During the Southern Uprising on the night of November 22nd to the morning of November 23rd, 1940, the Hoc Mon Party Committee had a very tight plan for the uprising and organizational preparations. Before the uprising, the Hoc Mon District Uprising Committee was established under the direct leadership of comrade Pham Van Sang - Secretary of the District Party Committee, Hoc Mon Party Committee. Mr. Sang mobilized a large force of the masses to participate in the uprising along with the insurgent force led by comrade Dang Cong Binh (Commander-in-Chief of the troops, directly commanding the spearhead troop of Tong Long Tuy Ha) to suddenly attack the Hoc Mon District Palace and control the situation until nearly 5:00 a.m.

In the battle, the communist soldiers showed their bravery and selflessness, not fearing danger or sacrifice. However, the insurgents had to retreat because the French colonialists sent reinforcements from Thu Dau Mot and Gia Dinh to relieve the siege. After that, the enemy launched many fierce sweeps, massacring the entire hamlet of Ben Do, Tan Phu Trung (present-day Cu Chi district).

After the failed uprising, on the way from Truong Mit to Xom Moi hamlet, Trung Lap village (Cu Chi), comrade Dang Cong Binh was discovered by informants, who shot and wounded him in the leg. After capturing him, the enemy used many tricks to lure, exploit and brutally torture him. In front of the enemy, with strong words, he boldly expressed the spirit of a revolutionary soldier. The village soldiers later said of him: "Truly worthy of being King Binh, the Communist Marshal".

The French colonialists set up three shooting ranges in Hoc Mon to execute those who participated in the uprising. At the shooting range near Hoc Mon market, they executed comrades Pham Van Sang, Dang Cong Binh and two soldiers. At the shooting range in front of the Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital today, they shot comrades Ha Huy Tap, Vo Van Tan, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Nguyen Huu Tien... At the third shooting range in Nga Ba Giong, Xuan Thoi Thuong commune, comrades Nguyen Van Cu, Phan Dang Luu and many other comrades were executed by the enemy. The uprising was not successful, but from then on, from this sacred land, a struggle movement arose everywhere, fostering the patriotic spirit of all classes of people.

It is known that currently, the children and grandchildren of martyr Dang Cong Binh are all successful in their studies and have stable careers in peacetime.

Marking the history of the Southern Uprising

Today's generation is proud to be born in the homeland of Hoc Mon - 18 villages of betel gardens, the heroic homeland, to turn determination into action, turn promises into practical work, strive to be worthy of the trust and expectations of previous generations, so that the image of the flame of Nam Ky in 1940 will always shine brightly.

To commemorate the heroic sacrifice of the soldier in the Southern Uprising, Ho Chi Minh City named a street after Dang Cong Binh in Xuan Thoi Son commune, Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City.

In 1996, the People's Committee of Hoc Mon District decided to name a school after him - Dang Cong Binh Secondary School. To meet the learning needs of students in the area due to the increase in the mechanical population moving from other localities, in the 2016 school year, the People's Committee of Hoc Mon District built a new Dang Cong Binh Secondary School at 78 Bui Cong Trung Street, Hamlet 3, Nhi Binh Commune, Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City with an area of 10,852m2.

The mission of the school is to educate and train students to develop comprehensively in "Morality - Intelligence - Fitness - Aesthetics", with a sense of responsibility, a sense of self-study, self-discipline, and good life skills.

The school named after martyr Dang Cong Binh has been a place of study and emulation for tens of thousands of students for nearly 30 years. Every year, on holidays, the school and students remember the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives to gain independence for the country.
