At 7am, during rush hour, the road from the Hanoi Highway BOT station to Rach Chiec bridge was jammed with a line of vehicles stretching nearly 1km. Vehicles including cars and motorbikes were almost stuck in place. The bridge section for cars was blocked on both sides, forcing all traffic to move into the motorbike lane. This made vehicles move slowly, causing congestion.
Rach Chien Bridge was seriously congested on the morning of January 22.
Despite the traffic police directing traffic, the situation continued for hours. By about 8am, traffic was back to normal.
According to the investigation, due to the crane serving the construction of the bridge girder of metro line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien line) having an accident, the construction unit was slow to return the road surface, leading to congestion. This area was already under heavy traffic pressure, and the barricades were not removed until nearly 7:30 am, causing the congestion to be severe.
Speaking to Thanh Nien , a representative of the HCM City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR - the investor) said that according to the license, the construction of the pedestrian bridge on the Hanoi - Vo Nguyen Giap highway will only be carried out at night, from 10 pm to 5 am the next morning. The investor requested to take 1 lane for cars and barriers to serve the construction and will restore the original state the next morning. However, last night (January 21), the construction process encountered an incident that caused the contractor to delay the restoration of the road surface.
"The prolonged occupation of the road surface during rush hour caused a large increase in the number of vehicles, leading to congestion. We coordinated with the traffic police to promptly arrive and direct traffic to resolve the incident," added a MAUR representative.
Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1 is currently constructing a pedestrian bridge system connecting 9 elevated stations with bus stations and residential areas. Most of the bridges are built along the Hanoi - Vo Nguyen Giap Highway. Currently, some bridges have had their girders installed and the upper structure has been constructed. It is expected that by mid-year, all bridges connecting elevated stations will be completed to serve the operation of the city's first metro line in the second quarter.
