Plants and animals create momentum for poverty reduction

Lam Dong province has implemented hundreds of livelihood diversification models, helping thousands of poor, near-poor and newly escaped-poverty households have more opportunities to develop production and increase income. Since then, poverty reduction work has achieved more practical and sustainable results.

In the period of 2021 - 2025, Lam Dong province has deployed about 300 models and projects to support production, with nearly 7,000 households benefiting.

Mr. Do Van Minh's family in Thuan Hanh commune (Lam Dong) received breeding cows from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction. With this support, his family has more opportunities to generate income, develop the economy and escape poverty. Mr. Minh shared: "I will take good care of the cows so that they can grow and reproduce, gradually stabilize the economy and escape poverty. For poor households like me, being supported with breeding cows is not only a great asset but also helps the family have more motivation to overcome difficulties and create a source of income."

Along with Mr. Minh, 30 poor and near-poor households in Thuan Hanh commune received breeding cows from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction. Each household was supported with a breeding cow, and at the same time, the commune regularly sent veterinary staff to the area to instruct people on breeding techniques, disease prevention and care to maximize the efficiency of the herd.

In the period of 2021 - 2025, Lam Dong province has implemented about 300 models and projects to support production, with nearly 7,000 poor, near-poor and newly escaped-poverty households benefiting. The models focus on areas suitable to local conditions and people's production habits such as raising cows, F1 wild boars, goats, commercial chickens, silkworms; supporting industrial crop and fruit tree varieties; along with supporting fertilizers and agricultural machinery. The total implementation cost reached more than 132.8 billion VND.

Localities also opened many training courses to help households master livestock and crop farming techniques. Thanks to this, many families not only created a stable source of income but also had savings to reinvest and escape poverty sustainably. The livelihood model not only helped people solve immediate difficulties but also changed their thinking about agricultural production. When they had plants, seeds and technical guidance, people were confident in raising livestock and growing crops, improving their family's economic efficiency.

According to the Office of the National Target Program on New Rural Development (NTM) in Lam Dong province, in the period of 2022 - 2025, the average multidimensional poverty rate will decrease by about 1.43% per year, equivalent to a decrease of 12,243 households; the multidimensional poverty rate of ethnic minorities in the whole province will decrease by 4.23%, equivalent to a decrease of 6,508 households. The support models have contributed to the completion of the economic growth target, ensuring social security, improving people's lives, increasing their income, creating conditions for poor and near-poor households to access basic social services according to the multidimensional poverty standard for the period of 2021 - 2025.

Among the 19 NTM criteria, criterion No. 10 on income and criterion No. 11 on poverty rate are always big challenges for many communes in Lam Dong province. Especially communes in remote areas, remote areas, and areas with high ethnic minority population. With these models of support for crops and livestock, people's income will increase, and communes will have the conditions to meet and maintain NTM standards.
