Caring for and protecting the 'buds on the branch'

During his lifetime, President Ho Chi Minh advised, "Children are like buds on a branch; knowing how to eat, sleep, and study is what makes them good." However, in reality, many children are still abused by their own relatives or placed in vulnerable situations. To ensure these "buds on the branch" know how to "eat, sleep, and study," the joint efforts of families, schools, and society are essential.

The case of 13-year-old Trinh Thi Huong from Linh Son ward, who was brutally beaten by her grandmother and two other men in her family, has once again sounded the alarm about child abuse. Although the incident occurred in mid-November and the scars from the beatings have gradually healed, public outrage remains.

Huong is just one of many children who have been abused by their relatives and found themselves in difficult circumstances in the province in recent years.

According to compiled data from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism: Currently, the province has over 405,000 children, of which nearly 4,500 are in special circumstances; over 38,000 are at risk of falling into special circumstances; tens of thousands are children from poor and near-poor households; 192 are orphans; 31 are abandoned; and 50 are homeless.

The problem of child sexual abuse has not ended. In 2025, the entire province recorded 27 cases. Notably, there were 2 cases where children suffered serious physical and mental harm due to violence.

In reality, many children are still at risk of falling into vulnerable situations, including lack of care, health and learning hazards, violence, and abandonment.

At-risk groups include: children living in impoverished families, families with drug or alcohol addiction, divorced parents, or families experiencing frequent conflict. This is especially true for girls, children living in impoverished families, or those in remote areas lacking community support and comprehensive protection policies, increasing their risk of falling into vulnerable situations.

Children in vulnerable situations not only experience direct impacts on their physical and mental health, but also have long-term effects on their intellectual development, social skills, and ability to integrate into the community.

Furthermore, children are also at high risk of falling into social vices such as drug abuse, prostitution, violence, or other illegal activities. These consequences not only affect the children's future but also impact the community and the overall development of society.

To protect children, Thai Nguyen province has regularly organized widespread public awareness campaigns on childcare, education , and protection, including relevant laws, decrees, and guiding documents. There has been coordinated cooperation between families, schools, communities, and relevant authorities.

In residential areas where there is a movement to build culturally exemplary families, each family member is encouraged to consciously and responsibly nurture the roots of the family home; the movement of exemplary grandparents and parents, and filial children and grandchildren is being widely promoted.

The Women's Union regularly organizes activities to disseminate information to its members about skills for being a wife and mother, and skills for interacting with children of different ages. The love of grandparents and parents for their children is the best way to create a safe living environment for them.

In the digital age, modern technology devices attract family members in many different ways. Individual personalities are revealed through their preferences. This is also one of the reasons why many children are at risk of falling into vulnerable situations. Therefore, identifying, supporting, and protecting children is not only the responsibility of families and schools, but also the duty of the entire society.
