"Wings" for the dream of flying into space

“The sky is not the limit, it is the beginning!” - that is shared by Aisha Bowe, business founder and global advocate for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The journey of this American former aerospace engineer is a testament to her perseverance in pursuing her dreams.

Aisha Bowe grew up in the United States, her father, a Bahamian immigrant, working as a taxi driver in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Although a career counselor encouraged her to study cosmetology, her father urged her to study mathematics at the local community college. A love of mathematics inspired Aisha Bowe to pursue an engineering degree at the University of Michigan. She earned a degree in aerospace engineering in 2008 and a master’s in space systems engineering in 2009 from the University of Michigan. After graduation, she worked at NASA Ames Research Center for six years as an aerospace engineer in Silicon Valley, where she focused on satellite research and optimization of the National Airspace System.

She is also the CEO of STEMBoard, an engineering company that has been named to the Inc. 5,000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies twice. A serial entrepreneur passionate about empowering students to pursue careers in STEM, Aisha has raised over $1.6 million to create LINGO, a coding toolkit that helps students learn engineering concepts at home. Today, the toolkit is used by over 5,000 students in 10 countries. LINGO counts major tech companies like Microsoft as its customers, along with nonprofits, historically black colleges and universities, and more.

LINGO has a mission to equip 1 million students with the necessary technology skills. "With LINGO, we provide learners with a series of STEM lessons, how hardware and software work together. In one kit, students can learn how to build and program a backup sensor for a driverless car. The same type of sensor can be found in Tesla. I hope that my work can "give wings" to women and girls to realize their dreams, contributing to narrowing the gender gap in technology," said Aisha.

"I want you to see yourself in me"

Aisha Bowe will join five other women on Blue Origin’s upcoming crewed flight, the first all-female crew since Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova in 1963. This will be the 11th flight of the New Shepard program and the 31st in the program’s history. The mission, known as NS-31, will be the 11th New Shepard flight to carry humans beyond the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space, an area 100 kilometers above the Earth’s surface.

Aisha says her journey from starting out at a community college to becoming a scientist , leading two companies, and becoming a motivational speaker has taught her the importance of having multiple goals. “I’m not afraid of change, I’m embracing it. Change means growth,” she says.

Success comes to those who are persistent, not just those who are smart.

Thinking about being the sixth woman of color in history to travel to space, Aisha said she was honored. Her mission went beyond scientific exploration, she brought handwritten postcards from students around the world , symbolizing their dreams and aspirations. "I want them to see themselves in me, to know that space is for anyone who is willing to dream and explore," she confided.

According to Aisha, private companies like Blue Origin are opening new doors to space travel. “Private companies are making space accessible to more people, and that’s great. It’s not just about astronauts, it’s about engineers, scientists, and people who dream of space exploration,” she said. Looking further, Aisha hopes to expand STEMeducation so that more people can get into the aerospace industry.

"I want to see more people fly into space, more students realize their potential. My journey proves that where you start does not determine where you can go. And I hope to use my story to inspire those who are dreaming of reaching for the stars," she emphasized.
