In a statement, Petronas said it had isolated the burnt pipeline. The fire department said the company had shut off valves on a 500-metre pipeline and that 49 homes in the area were affected by the fire.
According to images and videos shared on social media, the fire started early in the morning, with a giant orange flame on the horizon and a thick plume of smoke. Witnesses about 5 kilometers from the scene of the fire said the fire had decreased in intensity by early afternoon, but smoke and flames were still visible.
Ambulances rushed to the area, which was cordoned off by authorities. While no fatalities have been reported, the extent of injuries and damage is still unclear. Authorities had previously said some people may have been trapped in their homes.
Petronas said it is working closely with relevant agencies to ensure the safety of surrounding communities, protect the environment and maintain the security of gas supplies to the country. The Malaysian government has also set up relief centres at two local mosques.
