Huge fire burns down 170 houses in Japan

(CLO) A large fire on November 18 burned down more than 170 houses in a coastal city in southern Japan.

About 175 residents of the Saganoseki area of ​​Oita city were evacuated to an emergency shelter after the fire broke out at around 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency said on November 19.

One person is still missing while the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Aerial images from television stations showed houses reduced to rubble and thick columns of smoke rising from the town.

Local media reported that the fire also spread to nearby forested hillsides.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in a post on X that a military firefighting plane was dispatched at the request of the Governor of Oita Prefecture.
