A 7cm long Cheetos chip shaped like Charizard, a Fire-Dragon type Pokémon character, named “Cheetozard” and mounted on a custom Pokémon card, housed in a protective case.
According to auction house Goldin Auctions, the collectible was discovered and preserved by a sports memorabilia company between 2018 and 2022, before suddenly becoming famous on social media last year.
The auction started at $250 in mid-February and quickly escalated, closing at $72,000 , not including buyer's fees. In total, the anonymous buyer spent nearly $88,000 to own the snack, according to CNN.
Cheetos, a snack brand owned by PepsiCo through its subsidiary Frito-Lay, also commented on the surprise deal. The Cheetos Instagram account commented with an eye emoji, implying surprise.
On social media, the story of Cheetozard has attracted a lot of attention with many mixed opinions. Some people were surprised that a Cheetos could sell for the price of a luxury car, while others expressed their interest in this collectible item.
This isn’t the first time a uniquely shaped snack has fetched a high price. In 2017, a Cheetos shaped like Harambe, the famous gorilla, sold for nearly $100,000 on eBay.
According to Forbes, there are three main factors that helped Cheetozard sell for nearly $90,000 : the appeal of the Pokémon fan community, absolute scarcity, and the meme effect and internet culture. While rare Pokémon cards are limited in production, Cheetozard is one of a kind. This uniqueness creates a special value, making it a powerful collector's item for those who want to own something no one else has.
