Appropriating property of prisoner's family, sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison

On June 12, Kim Thanh District People's Court (Hai Duong province) opened the first instance trial of the case of fraud and property appropriation against defendant Nong Dinh Nghia (28 years old, residing in Quan Lang village, Quang Phong commune, Na Ri district, Bac Kan province).

According to the indictment, after learning that Tran Anh Tai (31 years old, residing in Dong Van area, Phu Thai town, Kim Thanh district) committed a crime and was being detained at the Hai Duong Provincial Police Detention Center, on August 7, 2022, Nong Dinh Nghia called and texted Ms. NTL, Tai's wife. Nghia pretended to be an officer of the Provincial Police Detention Center and told Ms. L. that Tai had fought with someone else in the detention center.

Nghia set a condition that if she wanted Tai not to be punished for fighting and to be transferred to another detention center with better conditions, Ms. L. had to transfer money to the account number provided by Nghia. Ms. L. believed that the information Nghia provided was true, so she transferred money four times to the bank account provided by Nghia, totaling 335 million VND.

When his actions were discovered, Nghia was arrested by the police and prosecuted for fraud and property appropriation.

Nong Dinh Nghia has 3 previous convictions for extortion, fraud and abuse of trust, and his criminal record has not been expunged.

After deliberation, the People's Court of Kim Thanh District sentenced Nong Dinh Nghia to 10 years and 6 months in prison.
