In an interview with a VNA reporter in Cuba on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of national reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), Dr. Ruvislei González Saez, senior researcher at the Cuban Center for International Policy Studies, assessed that the victory 50 years ago marked a glorious chapter in the history of the struggle to build and defend a unified Vietnam.
With this event, the mission of completely liberating the South and unifying the country was completed, opening a new era of independence and building the country towards development and prosperity.
The victory of April 30, 1975 has also helped Vietnam today have peace and stability, achieve great development achievements, become one of the most dynamic economies in the world and have achieved most of the Millennium Development Goals.
The Doi Moi program that followed has transformed the reality of a war-torn country. According to several UN agencies, Vietnam’s social welfare rate now exceeds that of some countries with equal or higher incomes.
Over the past five decades, Vietnam has successfully carried out its reform process and achieved important achievements of historical significance. The country has escaped from underdevelopment and become a middle-income country with an average annual economic growth rate of 7%.
Moreover, the scale and potential of the economy have also increased gradually over the years. Gross domestic product (GDP) increased 7 times, export value increased more than 200 times compared to the figures recorded before 1975.
Industry and services account for 83% of GDP. Meanwhile, per capita income exceeds 2,200 USD. The achievements of the past 50 years have laid the foundation and premise for this Asian country to continue to innovate and develop more strongly and comprehensively in the future.
The historic victory also left a great lesson on promoting the great national unity bloc under the wise and talented leadership of the Communist Party with an independent, autonomous, correct and creative political and military line.
The victory of the resistance war against the US to save the country was the result of the brilliant thinking and military art of the Vietnamese people under the successful and creative leadership of the Communist Party.
A victory that had global radiance and left profound significance for the era. It was a feat of revolutionary heroism, of Vietnamese dignity and intelligence in the era of President Ho Chi Minh and the military strategic genius of General Vo Nguyen Giap.
The event also marked the history of the Vietnamese people, strengthened solidarity and, above all, laid the foundation for the successful development and transformation of Vietnam's economy and society later on, starting with the consolidation of national independence and sovereignty, paving the way for socialism in the country.
During the arduous and glorious struggle, the Communist Party of Vietnam, under the wise leadership of President Ho Chi Minh, formed and simultaneously implemented two strategies: a people's democratic revolution in the South and a socialist revolution in the North with the goal of gaining independence, unifying the country, and bringing the country into a prosperous socialist era.
In that context, the valuable material and spiritual support of the international community was a key factor contributing to the victory over the American invaders and the puppet regime in Saigon.
The victory of April 30, 1975 also had a great impact on international history because it completely broke the geopolitical framework of the US empire towards the world; was a great driving force for revolutionary forces in the international arena; contributed to promoting the struggle of humanity for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress, and at the same time encouraged peace-loving peoples in the process of liberation from the domination of imperialism./.
