China's DDR5 Chips Are 5 Years Behind Samsung's

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/01/2025

According to Tom's Hardware , a Chinese researcher said that the die area of the 16-gigabit DDR5 chip produced by CXMT is 40% larger than that of a comparable DDR5 chip from Samsung Electronics. Samsung is currently the world's largest memory maker using advanced lithography technologies.

Specifically, the crystal area of the DDR5 chip produced by CXMT is determined to be 68.06 mm², while Samsung's chip has an area of only 48.9 mm², which clearly shows the Korean company's size advantage.

CXMT's DDR5 chip technology lags behind non-Chinese competitors

CXMT's DDR5 chip manufacturing technology lags behind

When Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix started releasing 16-gigabit DDR5 chips in 2021, their die sizes ranged from 66.26 to 72.21 mm², but the companies have since worked to reduce the size, according to a TechInsights report. This suggests that CXMT's current products are comparable in performance to first-generation DDR5 chips from non-Chinese manufacturers, which equates to a lag of about four to five years behind state-of-the-art solutions.

Additionally, CXMT’s manufacturing costs may be higher, along with the risk of encountering issues related to defect rates. However, CXMT’s partners can still produce DDR5-6000 memory modules based on its chips, meaning that their products can still be competitive in terms of performance. More importantly, CXMT’s Chinese customers will of course be happy to have access to this type of memory instead of having no other choice due to the many restrictions related to the ban.
