Give children peace in the summer.

- Summer is the time of year that children look forward to the most, but it is also often the period with the highest potential for accidents and injuries. Traffic accidents, drownings, and accidents in daily life are a concern for everyone, especially as this situation continues to occur in the province.

According to the Department of Health 's summary, in 2024, the province experienced 17 child injury incidents resulting in 15 child deaths. From the beginning of 2025 to the present, the province has recorded 13 child injury incidents resulting in 10 deaths, including 6 drownings, 2 traffic accidents, 1 electrocution, and 1 other cause. These figures are not new, but they remain a persistent warning about the seriousness of child injuries over the years, showing that the problem of child injuries has been and continues to be ineffectively controlled despite the implementation of many solutions by various levels and sectors.

Most recently, in early June 2025, LBL (born in 2018), residing in Na Tha village, Kim Dong commune, Trang Dinh district, was electrocuted while charging her phone at home. Her family rushed her to the hospital, but she did not survive. This is one of four fatal accidents involving children in Trang Dinh district during the first six months of 2025 (three drownings and one electrocution).

Ms. Hoang Thi Thuc, from Na Tha village, Kim Dong commune, shared: "We live in the countryside, and many families are busy working in the fields and forests, so it's difficult to carefully supervise our children. After the accidents, everyone is worried. Now, when we go to work, we have to tell our children to stay away from electrical devices at home and absolutely not to go to rivers or streams without an adult accompanying them."

Similarly, from the beginning of 2025 to the present, Loc Binh district has recorded 4 accidents resulting in 4 child deaths (2 drownings, 1 traffic accident, and 1 other cause). Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Loc Binh district, said: To minimize accidents for children, especially during the summer, we have been and will continue to direct communes, towns, agencies, and organizations to promote accident prevention skills through loudspeakers and to each family; at the same time, we will strengthen supervision of children during the summer, open safe swimming classes, and review high-risk areas to put up warning signs and erect barriers.

Given the ongoing situation of injuries and accidents threatening children's safety, especially during the summer holidays, the health sector and other sectors and organizations in the province have implemented many comprehensive solutions. The People's Committees of districts and cities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the District and City Health Centers have coordinated to strengthen the dissemination, promotion, and strict implementation of directives from the central and provincial authorities on injury and accident prevention and control. The Youth Union, the Women's Union, organizations, members of the child protection committees at the commune, ward, and town levels, and collaborators participate in closely monitoring children during the summer holidays, during periods of rain, storms, floods, and natural disasters to ensure safety and prevent injuries and drowning among children; and strengthen communication on injury and accident prevention and control. From the beginning of 2025 to the present, Lang Son Newspaper and Radio and Television have disseminated over 180 news articles on policies for child care and protection, emphasizing solutions for preventing child injuries. The education sector organized more than 1,150 propaganda sessions with a total of over 96,000 students participating. The Provincial Fatherland Front Committee coordinated and integrated over 2,300 propaganda sessions on health care and child protection. The Provincial Women's Union promoted the development of "Safety for Women and Children" models and organized propaganda on child-rearing skills in the community. The Provincial Youth Union also implemented multi-platform communication, distributing materials to 100% of youth branches, associations, and teams, attracting tens of thousands of youth members and children to participate...

However, to effectively address the issue of child injuries, a shift in mindset is needed from reactive to proactive prevention. Mr. Phan Lac Hoai Thanh, Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Health, affirmed: Given the recent series of child injuries in several areas over the past two months, we have coordinated with districts and cities to implement a comprehensive set of solutions to prevent and control these injuries. These include thoroughly reviewing and addressing high-risk areas such as unfenced ponds, lakes, and streams; launching a nationwide swimming education program; organizing life skills classes; providing first aid training; and intensifying widespread communication to every family and residential area to foster a proactive awareness of child protection.

Along with the concerted efforts of all levels and functional agencies, ensuring the safety of children during the summer requires the attention and cooperation of families, schools, and society as a whole. Each family and community needs to raise awareness of supervision, care, and create conditions for children to have a safe and meaningful summer vacation.
