An Giang has a long border with Cambodia. The terrain of the province is mostly plains, interspersed with rivers, canals, and complex trails and openings. Commonly smuggled goods include: cigarettes, sugar, foreign wine, cosmetics, confectionery, etc., which have prices lower than or equal to domestic goods. According to the Provincial Steering Committee 389, there are currently 26 warehouses on the other side of the Cambodian border (opposite the districts and towns of the province). Goods are gathered here to serve smuggling activities. Brokers often hire people to transport goods in small quantities like "cuu van", secretly bringing goods inland to avoid detection. However, no matter how sophisticated the smuggling is, it cannot escape the eyes of the authorities. Since then, the situation has been controlled and there have been clear changes.
In the first 5 months of 2025 alone, the provincial police, customs, border guards and specialized inspectors discovered and handled 281 cases of smuggling and transporting prohibited goods, involving 252 subjects, with a total value of goods up to 3.7 billion VND. Notably, 145 of these violations were administratively sanctioned, with fines, tax arrears and the value of confiscated goods exceeding 4.1 billion VND. The authorities have prosecuted 19 criminal cases (with 20 defendants), of which the police prosecuted 15 cases and the border guards prosecuted 5 cases.
Implementing the Prime Minister 's Official Dispatch 65/CD-TTg and Directive 13/CT-TTg, from May 15 to June 15, functional forces in the whole province simultaneously deployed a peak period to prevent and combat smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods. "The peak period aims to inspect and control the market from border areas to the inland and focus on investigating and expanding serious cases, strictly handling officials who assist in smuggling. Do not let counterfeit goods penetrate deep into the inland, affecting the interests of consumers and legitimate businesses..." - Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung said.
According to the Standing Committee of the Provincial Steering Committee 389, in the coming time, the province will continue to strengthen the peak periods of inter-sectoral coordination, both handling specific cases and dismantling organized smuggling rings with sophisticated operations. The province will strengthen the supervision of goods circulating on national highways, central markets, and e-commerce activities (where counterfeit goods are likely to exist).
The fight against smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods has never been easy. But with the determination of the entire political system, the consensus of the people, and close direction from the Central to the communes, An Giang is determined to be a "solid frontline" in the southwestern border area, contributing to protecting the economy and the legitimate rights of the people.
7 key tasks during the peak period against smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods in the province include: Strictly control border routes, border gates, markets and commercial centers. Strengthen patrols, mobile inspections and strictly handle acts of trading and transporting prohibited and counterfeit goods. Continue to investigate, prosecute and try major cases, and hold responsible organizations and individuals involved. Widely disseminate information to each household and small traders about the harmful effects of counterfeit and smuggled goods, and at the same time mobilize small traders in markets and commercial centers to sign a commitment not to assist in smuggling and trade fraud... |
