Many people are used to drinking tea in the morning. But did you know that starting your day with a cup of tea can do more harm than good?

While tea may be a delicious and soothing beverage, it contains caffeine, a stimulant that can affect the body, explains Vidhi Chawla, India's leading nutritionist.

Ms. Chawla highlights some of the potential negative effects of drinking tea early in the morning on an empty stomach:

Increased acid production, stomach irritation

Drinking tea or any other caffeinated beverage in the morning on an empty stomach can lead to increased acidity and digestive upset. This is because the caffeine in tea can stimulate the production of stomach acid, which can irritate the stomach lining, leading to discomfort, bloating, and nausea.

Reduces cortisol hormone production

Additionally, drinking tea early in the morning can interfere with the body’s natural production of cortisol, a hormone that helps regulate sleep-wake cycles and provides energy throughout the day, Chawla says.

Consuming caffeine early in the morning can interfere with the body's ability to produce cortisol, leading to feelings of fatigue and sluggishness throughout the day.

Dehydration

Tea is a diuretic and can cause dehydration, especially in the morning when the body is already dehydrated from going without water overnight.

The caffeine in tea can stimulate stomach acid production, which can irritate the stomach lining, leading to discomfort, bloating and nausea.

Interfere with nutrient absorption

Tea contains tannins, which can bind with minerals like iron and calcium, making it difficult for the body to absorb them.

Damage teeth

Tea contains natural acids that can erode tooth enamel, especially when consumed in large amounts or over long periods of time.

According to renowned nutritionist Pooja Makhija, bestselling author of nutrition books in India, the optimal time to drink tea is mid-morning after breakfast, as this is when the metabolism starts working smoothly, according to Times Now News.
