17 year old girl and the dream of "greening Hanoi"

At the age of 17, when many of her peers are busy with a tight schedule of studying and taking exams, Nguyen Khanh Ly (a student at Vietnam-USA College in Hanoi) chose a different path: becoming the leader of the "Green Hanoi" community, contributing to preserving a green - clean - beautiful living environment.

Nguyen Khanh Ly, a girl from Hai Phong, is not a strange name to the green living community in Hanoi . At the age of 17, this girl born in 2008 has been working persistently with the community for more than 2 years, organizing and coordinating many environmental programs. When asked why she started so early, Ly said: "When I was little, I followed my mother to clean up the park. I felt happy with this activity, and then it became a habit without me realizing it." Ly's love for the environment grew up in such a simple way.

"Every action is a brick to build a green future. If you don't know where to start today, try picking up a plastic bottle on the street. Maybe others will laugh at you. But one day, they will do the same - thanks to you."

Nguyen Khanh Ly , leader of the Hanoi Green Community

Joining the "Green Hanoi" community at the age of 15, Ly was a member of the communications team. At that time, she did not know much about coordination, document drafting, or how to make a plan. But by observing her seniors and re-reading campaign documents, Ly learned little by little. When she was nominated as the leader of the community, Ly frankly told everyone: "Please give me a try. I will prove that I can do it". At first, those words made many people hesitant. Could a 17-year-old girl with little experience run a community? Would she have enough courage to maintain the spirit of connection in an ever-changing community? But Ly did it. Not by imposition, but by effort, perseverance, serious learning, and love for the green environment.

Under Ly’s coordination, many large-scale trash collection campaigns were organized in districts and counties in Hanoi. Some campaigns attracted hundreds of young people to participate. What Khanh Ly is most proud of is not the amount of trash collected after each campaign, but the community culture that is formed: hugs after completing a task, picnics to draw pictures, recycle plastic bottles, or simply moments of resting together in the hot noon.

As a young leader, Khanh Ly does not deny that she has encountered difficulties and felt tired. Ly said that her greatest aspiration is to make "Green Hanoi" the largest environmental community in the North and then spread it nationwide. She also hopes that one day, when the community organizes a campaign, local people will join hands to take action. "I don't want to stop at organizing events. I want green living to become a habit," Khanh Ly expressed. It is Ly's perseverance that has sown "green seeds" for the environment, not only in the heart of the city, but also in people's hearts.
