According to sources, on December 25, Israel conducted an airstrike on an area outside the Syrian capital, killing Sayyed Razi Mousavi, a senior adviser to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, responsible for coordinating the military alliance between Damascus and Tehran.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that Israel “will certainly pay the price” for the incident. Meanwhile, the Times of Israel reported that the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement condemned the Israeli airstrike, asserting that it “crossed all limits.”
According to AP, neither the Israeli military nor Syrian state media have made any announcements about the incident, while Israeli officials have declined to comment.
The incident comes amid concerns that the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip will spill over into the region. Iran-backed groups in Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq now regularly carry out attacks on Israel and its allies to publicly show support for Hamas.
Clashes along the Lebanon-Israel border between Hezbollah and the Jewish state continue to escalate, with daily missile, air and artillery exchanges across the border.
In the Red Sea, attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels against ships they say are linked to Israel have disrupted trade, prompting the United States to launch a multinational naval operation to protect shipping lanes.
Iran-backed militias in Iraq operating under a group known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have also carried out more than 100 attacks on US military bases in Iraq and Syria, which they say are in retaliation for Washington's support for Israel.
Earlier this month, Israeli airstrikes in Syria also killed two other Iranian generals.
