As the world continues to witness remarkable advances in all areas of technology, Vietnam is not only catching up but also making its mark in a number of key areas, from 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, to semiconductor technology and sustainable development.

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of National Day, September 2, let's look back at Vietnam's outstanding technological achievements, the trends that are shaping the future, and the potential for the country to become a global technology highlight.

5G network covers the whole country - Smart follow-up strategy

5G network was first commercialized in Korea in 2019. Following that, a series of countries have commercialized and covered this latest network technology.

However, in Vietnam, it was not until October 2024 that Viettel became the first network operator to commercialize 5G after a period of trial coverage. After Viettel, the two major networks in Vietnam, VinaPhone and MobiFone, also began commercializing the 5G network.

For 5G networks, instead of racing to be a pioneer, Vietnam has adopted a “smart follower” strategy, taking advantage of falling infrastructure costs, mature technology standards, and lessons from previous countries.

This approach allows Vietnam to deploy 5G more economically and efficiently, especially in priority areas such as high-tech zones, ports, industrial parks, etc., helping to optimize resources and direct investment to areas that bring high economic value.

Thanks to that, Vietnam is one of the countries with 5G network coverage throughout the entire territory, with high network speed and stability, bringing economic efficiency as well as meeting users' high-speed Internet needs.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Vietnam's Great Progress

Artificial intelligence (AI) is at the heart of the global technological revolution and Vietnam is not out of this wave, with the participation of large domestic technology corporations such as FPT, VinGroup, Viettel...

FPT, one of the leading technology corporations in Vietnam, has invested heavily in AI research and application, especially Generative AI. FPT's AI solutions are applied in many fields, from healthcare, education to finance.

For example, the FPT AI platform supports businesses in automating processes, optimizing customer experiences through intelligent chatbots and real-time data analysis.

Meanwhile, VinGroup is developing AI applications to solve sustainable healthcare problems, with highly accurate medical imaging diagnostic models, helping doctors make decisions more quickly and effectively.

In addition, VinGroup also entered the race to develop humanoid robots, a market that promises to "explode" globally in the near future.

A notable event was “AI for Good Vietnam 2025”, a competition for high school students nationwide, to encourage them to learn and apply artificial intelligence (AI) to solve community problems and move towards sustainable development, held in Hanoi last May.

The event demonstrated the potential of Vietnam's young generation in using AI to solve social problems, from climate change to sustainable education.

AI startups have also appeared more and more in Vietnam, helping to bring Vietnam's AI industry to the region and the world.

Semiconductor Technology - Positioning Vietnam on the Global Map

The shift in global supply chains, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, has opened up great opportunities for Vietnam. Major technology corporations such as Intel, Samsung and Qualcomm have invested billions of dollars in Vietnam to build semiconductor manufacturing and research facilities.

Previously, Intel invested in and operated the world's largest chip assembly and testing plant in Ho Chi Minh City, contributing to making Vietnam an important link in the global high-tech supply chain.

In 2024, Samsung Electronics - the largest foreign investor in Vietnam - announced plans to expand its chip testing and packaging facility in Thai Nguyen with an investment capital of nearly 1 billion USD.

In addition, Vietnam has been promoting the training of high-quality human resources in the semiconductor field. Universities such as Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, FPT University, etc. have cooperated with international enterprises to build specialized training programs in the semiconductor field, meeting the human resource needs of this industry worth hundreds of billions of USD.

The government also issued tax incentives and investment support policies to attract more of the world's leading technology corporations, creating momentum for Vietnam to not only participate but also lead in some segments of the semiconductor industry.

Many businesses in Vietnam have also won large chip export orders. For example, CT Group has just signed a contract to export 100 million semiconductor chips to a partner in Korea.

Sustainable Technology - Towards a Green Future

In the context of increasingly serious climate change, sustainable technology is becoming an indispensable trend.

According to a report from Fortune , the global green and sustainable technology market is expected to grow from $20.9 billion in 2024 to $105.26 billion by 2032, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.4%.

Vietnam is actively participating in this trend, with support from large technology corporations and government policies.

Vietnamese enterprises such as Viettel and VNPT have applied Internet of Things (IoT) and AI technology to optimize energy management and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, startups in Vietnam are also developing innovative solutions, such as technology to capture CO2 from the atmosphere and batteries to store renewable energy, contributing to the country's carbon neutrality goal.

Vietnam is also becoming one of the leading countries in Southeast Asia in developing renewable energy, especially solar and wind power. Many large corporations are also investing heavily in offshore wind power projects in Vietnam with a capacity of thousands of MW.

The Vietnamese Government has demonstrated its strong commitment through Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW2 on science, technology development and digital transformation, which was implemented in May 2025. A monitoring and evaluation system for the implementation of this resolution has been put into operation, helping to ensure that sustainable development goals are effectively implemented.

Digital Government, Digital Transformation - Foundation for the Future

Vietnam is considering digital transformation as the main driving force for socio-economic development. This process began to be accelerated in 2020, when the Prime Minister approved the "National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030" under Decision No. 749/QD-TTg.

The program focuses on three pillars: digital government, digital economy and digital society; aiming to build a stable, prosperous digital nation, pioneering in testing new technologies.

The digital transformation process in Vietnam is led by the National Committee on Digital Transformation, chaired by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. Since 2021, Vietnam has focused on digitizing state management activities, developing digital infrastructure and promoting the digital economy.

Important policies include Resolution 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo (issued on December 22, 2024), emphasizing breakthroughs in science and technology, innovation and national digital transformation. This resolution is considered as "Contract 10" for the digital sector, with the goal of bringing Vietnam into the global top 50 in e-government/digital government by 2028 and top 40 by 2030.

Along with digital transformation, Vietnam is also achieving many achievements in building digital government.

To date, 80% of online public services have reached level 4, with the entire process of performing administrative procedures, from submitting documents, paying fees (if any) to receiving results, all being carried out on the Internet.

National databases such as Population, Land, Business Registration have been completed and connected nationwide, reducing 30% of administrative procedures. Public service applications allow people to quickly perform administrative procedures via the Internet, in which VNeID has become one of the indispensable applications on people's phones.

With the spirit of "dare to explore", Vietnam is aiming for the digital economy to account for 30% of GDP by 2030, affirming its position as the leading digital nation in the region. This process not only brings growth but also improves the quality of life of the people.

Connecting the past, towards the future - From potential to position

Vietnam’s technological achievements are a testament to the nation’s spirit of innovation and aspiration to rise up. From an agricultural country, Vietnam has become a high-tech hub, with proud advances in AI, semiconductors, sustainable technology and digital transformation.

Opportunities from the shift in global supply chains, along with investment from large technology corporations and supportive government policies, are opening up a bright future for Vietnam.

After 80 years since gaining independence, Vietnam is entering an era of growth, no longer a "follower" but gradually rising to the ranks of pioneering countries in a number of cutting-edge technology fields.

The road ahead is still full of challenges, but today's achievements are a testament to the strategic vision and perseverance of the Vietnamese people in their journey to conquer technology for a sustainable future.
