Bloomberg News on April 23 quoted informed sources as saying that billionaire Elon Musk's brain implant company Neuralink is planning to raise about $500 million at a pre-money valuation of $8.5 billion.
The company has reportedly begun preliminary discussions with potential investors, but terms of the funding round have not yet been finalized.
Neuralink has not responded to requests for comment.
The company is estimated to be worth about $5 billion in 2023, based on individual share transactions collected by Reuters.
Neuralink previously raised $280 million in a funding round led by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund.
Neuralink is testing its implant, which aims to help people with spinal cord injuries. The device has allowed the first patient to play video games, browse the internet, post on social media and move a mouse cursor on a laptop directly with their brain.
In 2023, Reuters reported that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially rejected Neuralink's request to begin human clinical trials due to safety concerns. The agency has since granted Neuralink permission to conduct clinical trials, which are still ongoing.
Mr Musk has expressed big ambitions for the company, saying its chips will allow both healthy and disabled people to easily travel to nearby facilities for quick implantation of devices to treat conditions such as obesity, autism, depression and schizophrenia. He even envisions the devices being used to surf the web and communicate telepathically.
In February 2025, Reuters reported that the FDA had contacted several recently fired scientists , including those who had worked on Neuralink's device review, to ask if they would like to return to work.
Synchron Inc, a competitor of Neuralink, is also testing an implant that could help people with motor impairments type on computers./.
