According to Reuters on August 26, in its lawsuit, xAI alleges that Apple and OpenAI have "locked down the market to maintain a monopoly and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing."
Apple is currently collaborating with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its operating system for iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.
The lawsuit alleges that Apple's exclusive agreement with OpenAI prevented its X and Grok apps from being prominently featured on the App Store. The company says it is seeking billions of dollars in damages.
"One million reviews with an average rating of 4.9 for Grok, yet Apple still refuses to include Grok in any of its lists," billionaire Musk angrily shared on social media platform X on August 25th. He founded xAI in 2023 with the goal of competing with OpenAI and other leading chatbot developers.
An OpenAI spokesperson refuted the accusation, calling it "part of Musk's ongoing pattern of harassment." Apple representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment.
Earlier this month, Musk threatened to sue Apple, writing on X that Apple's behavior "makes it impossible for any AI company other than OpenAI to reach the number one spot on the App Store."
Following that statement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman countered, saying: "This is a surprising accusation considering what I've heard about Musk manipulating the X platform to benefit himself and his company, while disadvantaging competitors."
Some X users also objected to the xAI founder's allegations, stating that rival apps like DeepSeek and Perplexity had previously ranked number one on the App Store after Apple and OpenAI announced their partnership.
This isn't the first time billionaire Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. In 2024, he sued the company and its founder, Sam Altman, in California, alleging breach of contract for prioritizing commercial interests over the original mission of developing AI "for the common good of mankind."
OpenAI denied this at the time, claiming that Musk used the lawsuit and social media as tools to exert pressure, even making a "fake offer" worth $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI and harming the company's business relationship.
It is known that billionaire Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015, before leaving in 2018 due to disagreements over direction.
