On the evening of December 27, many Facebook users in Vietnam shared information about a new incident with the IA (Inter-Asia) submarine cable, causing "lag" and slow connections when using services with servers located abroad. "I heard that the IA cable line is having an incident. The 7-character network operator cannot access it. Please confirm," a news page with a large following posted a question.
Below the comment section, dozens of Viettel network users confirmed that they could not or had very slow access to foreign websites, could not watch online videos... Only a few in this group said that their home network connection was still normal. Mr. Ngoc Tam (HCMC) said that when he saw the above information, he checked his home internet connection with common measuring tools and found no abnormalities.
The IA and APG submarine cables connecting Vietnam to the world are both having problems.
However, according to a network operator's staff, the drop in international connection capacity via the IA submarine cable began occurring at around 9 p.m. on December 26. This incident caused congestion in international connections during peak hours in the evening, causing some customers to experience slow or intermittent access to foreign websites and applications such as YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, etc.
"The IA submarine cable problem has led to difficulty in accessing at certain times of the day," the person said, affirming that the company is working with partners to speed up the handling process.
In a shared email sent to customers by one of the major internet service providers (ISPs) in Vietnam, the unit also confirmed the information matching the above content. Accordingly, the incident on the IA submarine cable connecting Vietnam to the world has occurred since the evening of December 26 (not December 27 as many information are sharing on the internet).
Nearly a month ago (November 29, 2024), the APG submarine cable also encountered a problem and has not yet been fixed. These two events have affected the internet connection from Vietnam to the international level. "We have proactively transferred traffic to backup connections, however, during peak hours, your international internet access may still be affected and slower than usual," the information sent from the ISP to users stated.
Viettel has not yet given an official response to the information about the IA submarine cable incident as well as the impact on the company's transmission line as reported by users.
Currently, the IA submarine cable is used by many network operators such as Viettel, FPT Telecom, CMC Telecom, VNPT... However, the traffic usage is not too much.
