More specifically, Mr. Abramovich expressed his desire to return to the field, even just once, to say a "proper goodbye" to Chelsea.

In March 2022, Abramovich announced that he had no choice but to sell Chelsea amid mounting allegations that he was an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which led to sanctions from the British government shortly afterwards.

But the book "Sanctioned: The Inside Story of the Sale of Chelsea FC" reveals a different side. The book depicts Abramovich working tirelessly and secretly on peace negotiations from the early days of the offensive, even after he was poisoned in an apartment in Kiev.

The sale of the club to Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital Group in May 2022 raised £2.5bn, money that is now sitting in a frozen UK bank account waiting to be transferred to charities supporting war victims in Ukraine.

In interviews for the book, Abramovich candidly revealed that he never wanted to own another club after leaving Chelsea - the team he bought for £140m in 2003 and led to a string of trophies.

When asked about Chelsea and his future plans, Abramovich shared: "Maybe one day there will be an opportunity for me to go to a match and say a proper goodbye, but that's it."

"I have no interest in any role at a football club, certainly not a professional role," he insisted.

However, Abramovich left the door open to support: "There might be something I can do to help academies and young players, giving more opportunities to those in difficult circumstances, if there's an initiative that really makes a difference. But in terms of ownership or a professional role at a club, I'm done with that in this life."

Regarding the accusations against him, including from the British Government, Abramovich calmly said: "There is an old Russian saying 'the dogs bark, the caravan moves on', and that is very true here. Whatever I do, people will always accuse me of having some kind of intention."
