On November 6, Bach Mai Hospital announced that its doctors had saved the life of a critically ill European female tourist while traveling in Vietnam.
During a trip to Sa Pa, a female European tourist suddenly had severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, and fell into critical condition.
The female patient in severe respiratory failure after receiving first aid at a medical facility in Lao Cai was quickly transferred to Bach Mai Hospital. Initial examination results showed that the patient had acute coronary syndrome on the basis of a history of coronary stent placement, a large left pleural effusion, and SpO₂ of only 86%.
Bach Mai Hospital doctors diagnosed upon admission: Acute myocardial infarction on the second day, complications of acute pulmonary edema, left pleural effusion, heart failure on the old stent and COPD.
Immediately, the patient received intensive, comprehensive treatment according to international standards. Initially, doctors performed pleural fluid drainage and respiratory support, helping SpO₂ improve rapidly from 86% to 95%. At the same time, optimal treatment for acute coronary syndrome and acute heart failure was implemented synchronously.
Even though the patient could not speak English, the doctors still coordinated effectively thanks to the timely support of the Embassy, ensuring transparent communication and explanation of the patient's condition, helping the patient and his family feel completely secure.
After stabilizing breathing and circulation, Bach Mai Hospital's professional council unanimously ordered coronary angiography and intervention.
After the intervention, the patient no longer had chest pain or difficulty breathing, his vital signs were stable, and his heart muscle was saved. After treatment, the patient recovered well and was discharged safely.
Associate Professor Dao Xuan Co - Director of Bach Mai Hospital said that as soon as receiving information about the foreign patient in critical condition, the hospital mobilized maximum multidisciplinary strength, coordinating smoothly between the A9 Emergency Center, the Cardiovascular Institute, the Intensive Care Department and related units./.
