On the afternoon of November 6, at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , in response to a question from a VNA reporter asking about Vietnam's efforts in preventing and combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said:
Vietnam's stance on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing is consistent and has been stated many times. Vietnam advocates sustainable development of the marine economy , maintaining sustainable development of the fishing industry with a vessel and craft structure appropriate to the exploitation capacity of aquatic resources; fully complying with regulations on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
In recent times, Vietnam has built and perfected the legal system on fisheries to ensure effectiveness and efficiency, while implementing many measures to prevent and stop illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities, and resolutely and strictly handling violations publicly and transparently.
Recently, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed and issued the "Action Plan for the peak month against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and sustainable development of Vietnam's fisheries industry."
Vietnamese authorities and localities have been, are and will regularly manage, propagate, educate and deploy many specific measures so that fishermen comply with Vietnamese laws and respect the sea areas of countries established in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and relevant international conventions and agreements that Vietnam has signed or is a member of.
“As an active, proactive and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam is always ready to work with countries in the region and the international community to strengthen cooperation and share experiences in combating illegal fishing, promoting effective and sustainable fisheries management in accordance with international law,” Ms. Pham Thu Hang emphasized./.
