Mazda has just announced an ambitious electrification plan for the end of the decade, focusing on hybrid SUVs, in-house electric vehicles, and high-performance sports cars. Of these, the hybrid version of the Mazda CX-5, the company's best-selling SUV, is considered a highlight and will officially launch in 2027. Although the new generation of the CX-5 was introduced this year, Mazda decided to spend more time developing a hybrid version with a fully hybrid powertrain researched and produced by the company itself.
This configuration combines a 2.5L SkyActiv-Z gasoline engine and an electric motor, marking the first time a "pure Mazda" hybrid model has appeared in the main product line in the US market. Currently, Mazda's electrified vehicle portfolio in the US includes the CX-50 hybrid, CX-70 and CX-90 plug-in hybrid. With the addition of the CX-5 hybrid, Mazda expects the CX-5 and CX-50 hybrid models to achieve cumulative sales of 250,000 units per year in the North American market alone, helping to consolidate its position in a context where pure electric vehicles are still facing many barriers. Along with the CX-5 hybrid, Mazda will also launch its first all-electric vehicle developed internally, aiming to gradually build its position in the EV segment.
In addition, the joint venture between Mazda and its Chinese partner will introduce two all-new electric models: the Mazda6e sedan and CX-6e SUV, targeting fast-growing markets. In addition, Mazda confirmed that it will bring an electrified variant of the RX-7 back to the market under the name Iconic SP. This model is expected to be launched between 2026 and 2028, based on the concept that appeared at the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show (46th BIMS). In addition, the MX-5 convertible line is also refreshed with a refined exterior design and upgraded 4-cylinder gasoline engine, providing the signature driving experience that has become a symbol of Mazda for decades. In the context of the global electric car market being saturated and many car manufacturers facing declining sales, Mazda chose a cautious path by prioritizing hybrids, an intermediate solution that helps customers easily access electrification technology without having to worry about charging infrastructure or travel distance.
This strategy shows that Mazda understands consumer psychology and is looking to retain its traditional customer base, while gradually transitioning to an electric vehicle future in a methodical and calculated manner. According to many experts, the hybrid version of the Mazda CX-5 along with new electric and sports car models about to be launched will mark the Japanese automaker's electrification acceleration phase in the US.
