Multi-level marketing 'traps' students

USING FAKE FACEBOOK, "GHOST" ADDRESSES TO RECRUIT

From the information provided by the student, the reporter contacted the account Tran My Duyen via Facebook, applying for a cosmetics sales job. This person promised to pay a salary of 3.2 - 7.6 million VND/month. On April 9, this person made an appointment to meet the reporter at an address on Nui Thanh Street (Ward 13, Tan Binh District) for a job interview. During the investigation, the reporter determined that the account Tran My Duyen was a fake personal page created by an employee named Thang to post and lure students to apply for jobs.

Many students come and go to Vinalink Group's branch in Tan Binh District.

At noon the same day, the reporter arrived at the address provided by My Duyen (this is the address of a private hospital). Over the phone, this person guided the reporter around many small alleys, before being welcomed by a young man named Quang (20 years old) into a 3-storey building (No. 320/12 Truong Chinh, Ward 13, Tan Binh District). In front of the building was a Vinalink Group sign. Quang explained that he did not give the reporter the exact address because the Vinalink Group address overlapped with a residential address (!?).

Chaotic scene inside Vinalink Group branch when hundreds of students crowded into a startup classroom

Quang took the reporter to the first floor, where the business classes would take place. The scene inside the room overwhelmed the reporter, hundreds of student bags were piled up and scattered on the floor. Hundreds of students aged 18-20 were standing and sitting on plastic chairs, shouting about how to learn how to get rich. The noise was as chaotic as a swarm of bees. Around each corner of the wall were many stacked boxes of goods, printed with the words Vietnam Joint Stock Company. At the beginning of the conversation, to make it easier to get acquainted, Quang boasted that his income and that of many other employees when working here was tens of millions of VND/month. Quang always showed off his wealth and success, but the reality was completely the opposite. Quang wore an oversized, wrinkled and slightly dirty white shirt, and loose trousers. Quang was thin and small, wearing leather shoes that were wider than his feet, looking austere. Not only Quang, but that is a common characteristic of successful "gentlemen" and "ladies" in their teens and twenties here.

Many lessons on business to get rich were drawn by Quang and his team.

On the first day, Quang showed interest, asked about the reporter's personal life, interests, family background, economic conditions... Grasping this core information, from here Quang and many employees here painted a rosy picture of life; used many associative stories, focusing on the greed and fear of job seekers.

ACCOMPANY APPLICANTS

After many days of investigation, the reporter discovered that from the moment they arrived at the company gate, the students were closely followed by the staff. Specifically, every day was divided into 2 shifts for studying and working. The first shift was from 8am to 12pm, the second shift was from 1pm to 5pm. In the middle of the day, all students were not allowed to rest but had to gather in groups, under the supervision of the company's staff. The students were always monitored by the company's staff in a 1-on-1 manner; even when they went to the toilet, someone followed them "like a shadow". The use of phones was monitored, limited and students were absolutely forbidden from communicating, asking for phone numbers or getting to know each other. During lunch breaks, there were staff sitting next to them to monitor.

If I can’t sell the goods or I’m busy, there is a sales support team. Because we are in the same team, if they sell the goods, I will also get a commission. I don’t have to work to make a living.

During many lunches, reporters deliberately sat next to new students, and were immediately asked by Quang to move away; or other employees would squeeze in and sit in the middle, interrupting the conversation. At the end of the lunch, reporters and students were given the excuse of "seeing them off for a while" by company employees, but in reality, they were being monitored to ensure that we could not contact each other.

Vinalink Group's branch office in Tan Binh District (HCMC), which was accused by some students of being a multi-level marketing scam.

Leaving the company, the staff continuously texted students asking questions like: "Have you arrived home yet? What are you doing? Have you slept yet? Have you eaten yet?...". If the students did not answer in time, the staff would call until they answered the phone. And there is a saying that the staff of Vinalink Group always repeated, forcing students to remember by heart: "Do not share the story of working here with anyone in the family, friends, teachers...". In addition, the staff required that when students stepped out of the company gate, they were not allowed to listen to anyone outside who came close to talk to them.

Much later, an employee named H. (who had quit Vinalink Group) revealed that this was a tactic and script that the employees were trained to use to "psychologically manipulate" students, on the one hand isolating them from everyone around them, preventing them from being influenced by outsiders, and on the other hand, paying too much attention so that the "prey" felt loved like family, always being dominated by the image of the employee in their mind.

" Eat without working"

Called a trial interview, but in reality, every day the reporter was only taken to meet and listen to 7-8 "businessmen" tell stories about the rosy life when working at a multi-level marketing company. According to Quang, these are excellent employees, senior managers, directors..., who are successful examples of the company, with salaries ranging from tens to hundreds of millions of VND/month.

During the interview, the reporter was arranged to sit face to face with each "businessman" and was asked to only look forward, not to look around (to ensure that the "prey" did not see any unusual things around). During many days of study, the reporter discovered that behind each student there were always 1-2 people standing to signal and adjust the script. For example, when the reporter talked to Quang, behind the reporter there was another person crossing his hand (stopping the conversation), rotating his hand (changing the content), waving his hand (speaking faster)... Thus, this process had been scripted.

The philosophies and comparisons that PV was constantly fed by young "entrepreneurs" were: Working in Vinalink Group means being the master of yourself and your work; Doing business in this environment is modern business; Business people here (ie Vinalink Group) do not need experience, do not need capital, do not worry about risks, do not have competition, do not fear failure... and especially "do not work but still have food".

Explaining about "no work but still have food", Quang said that doing business at Vinalink Group is a team business, if you don't need to do it yourself, someone else will do it for you. "If I can't sell the goods or I'm busy, there is a team to support the sales. Because we are in the same team, if they sell the goods, I will also get a commission. No work but still have food", Quang led about a rosy life when becoming an employee here.

Thus, immature first and second year students, while applying for jobs, are lured into the multi-level marketing path. Here, students are crammed, manipulated, their thinking distorted, their perception blurred, and then gradually fall into the multi-level marketing trap...

Through verification, Thanh Nien reporters determined that Vinalink Group is one of 20 companies licensed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade to operate multi-level marketing. The multi-level marketing activities of the companies are carried out according to the instructions in Decree 40/2018 on the management of multi-level marketing business activities.
