There was a time when subjects in the field of culture and arts such as music , fine arts... were often overlooked, even considered "minor subjects", with little practical value compared to natural sciences or social sciences. However, this perception is gradually changing because the social community has realized the essential role of culture and arts in the comprehensive development of students' personalities.
The 2018 generaleducation program is a clear demonstration of this shift at the general education level. Accordingly, subjects on culture and arts are included in the main curriculum at the basic education stage (primary and secondary school) and are optional subjects at the career orientation education stage (high school) with specific goals. That is to equip students with basic knowledge and skills in art; form and develop aesthetic capacity; arouse and nurture artistic talent. Thanks to changes in perception and approach, students have been educated to respect and promote traditional cultural and artistic values of the nation; know how to select and absorb the good and beautiful things of modern culture and art...

The 2018 general education program requires educational activities to ensure the formation and development of students' aesthetic abilities; at the same time, discover and nurture students' talents. |
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Buon Krong Tuyet Nhung, Deputy Director of the Center for Social Sciences and Humanities - Tay Nguyen University, to carry out the mission of preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of the ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands, Tay Nguyen University has focused on life skills education and bringing the culture of the ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands into schools.
The plan for ethnic cultural education activities is implemented annually to equip generations of students of the school with basic knowledge about the traditional cultural capital of ethnic minorities, contents related to the system of tangible and intangible cultural heritage typical of ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands.
Typical examples are traditional festivals, customs, folk games, folk songs, folk dances, and folk knowledge of the Central Highlands in developing livelihoods, protecting the natural environment, and folk literature heritage (epic poems, stories, rhymes, etc.).
The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of Tay Nguyen University has organized many activities and orientations for young people to participate in preserving and promoting traditional cultural values such as costume competitions, performing arts, folk games... From 2019 to present, the school has coordinated with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to organize classes to teach gong performance for ethnic minority students... Thereby, it has provided students with a methodical and in-depth way to perceive traditional culture so that they can become "ambassadors" to promote and preserve traditional culture for the future.

In reality, the positive movement of cultural and artistic education in schools is always closely linked and integrated with other educational activities because of its familiar presence in social life. Students have more opportunities to learn and perceive multi-dimensional forms of traditional culture to aim for beauty, love beauty and preserve beauty.
In particular, the integration of traditional culture into subjects has "softened" social science knowledge so that students can absorb it more easily.
For example, music can be used to illustrate historical knowledge, art can support the study of literature, drama can help students explore social issues, etc. This approach creates connections of knowledge, helping students gain a deeper understanding and interest in both art and other subjects.
In addition, students also learn through practical activities, creative experiences (visiting and experiencing villages, learning brocade weaving, pottery making), participating in art projects, performances, exhibitions to directly explore, express themselves and develop aesthetic abilities...
