Artist Dao Anh Khanh has returned with Universe Inspired Part 1 on December 2 at Lunet Art, 63 Hoang Dieu ( Hanoi ), after 4 years of silence since his last exhibition. Universe Inspired Part 1 includes 35 works painted by Dao Anh Khanh in acrylic on canvas, expressing a tendency towards surrealism. Most of the works were painted in 2023, and a few were painted during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The magnified world of insects and plants
As the name suggests, Universe Inspired Part 1 is inspired by the universe. Right from the name, the works share this inspiration: Flower of the Sky , Valley of Love , Heavenly Levels ; Excited Universe , Closing Eyes to Open the World , Dance of Heaven and Earth , Arrangement of Creation , Singing Universe , Universe as It Is , Golden Paradise , Hand of Creation , Drunk Moon on Earth , Heaven and Earth Meet Fate ...
"I don't know if this is the first time an artist has interpreted the beauty of the universe fully and directly through painting. But this will certainly be a series of in-depth exhibitions because I will go from the whole universe to small, specific observations such as blades of grass, pistils, seeds, etc. The public will not admire those images of flowers and leaves in a mundane or purely natural way, because they have been pushed deeper, with clearer artistic expression. That is the path, the story I want to bring to the public," artist Dao Anh Khanh shared.
Nude or semi-nude female figures continue to appear in Dao Anh Khanh's paintings.
In this exhibition, Dao Anh Khanh focuses on exploiting the changing beauty of the universe in the natural aspect with trees, flowers, and yin and yang. "In praising the beauty of the universe, I have no message separate from the beauty of nature," the artist said. This beauty of the universe, this natural beauty, according to the artist, originates from the Valley of the Sky, where he currently lives in Hoa Binh . The scenery here is described by him as so beautiful that it seems unreal.
In Dao Anh Khanh's works this time, we see a world of strange flowers and plants. Viewers clearly see that it is a world with giant trees, flowers and fruits, and humans seem tiny. "The main subject I mentioned is the excitement of plants and flowers, not flowers in general, it can feel like flowers from the dinosaur era and humans have become small. This is the way I emphasize the subject I mentioned. If the main role is played, the flowers are exaggerated, much larger, humans are only a supporting role to praise the beauty of nature, flowers, plants and trees", Dao Anh Khanh said. However, Dao Anh Khanh affirmed that exaggerating flowers and plants does not mean that the role of people is less than that of flowers.
The story of the universe revealed in Dao Anh Khanh's paintings
On the opening day of December 2, Dao Anh Khanh will perform with dancers, leading everyone to his own world of painting. The female actors will wear Ao Dai and skirts designed with Dao Anh Khanh's own paintings.
Dao Anh Khanh is one of the famous contemporary artists in Vietnam. He has exhibited his paintings in more than 20 countries around the world, and has been introduced on BBC, Discovery channel, NHK, New York Times... Since 1999, Dao Anh Khanh has attracted the public thanks to his performance art, of which Dao Xuan is a brand. In 2019, Dao Xuan 9 - also the last and largest Dao Xuan of artist Dao Anh Khanh - had the participation of more than 250 international artists from 27 countries and 50 Vietnamese artists.
