According to the work “History of Vietnamese currency” by the State Bank of Vietnam , the 1978 currency set was the first currency set issued by the State Bank of Vietnam nationwide, opening a new page in the history of Vietnamese currency. The 5 Dong banknote is 124x62mm in size, pink-blue in color. The front side is printed with the denomination “FIVE DONG” and the number “5”. The back side is printed with an image of Ha Long fishing port (Quang Ninh).

The 5-dong bill has two types of serial numbers: the type with the serial number printed close together on the right side of the bill; the type with the serial number printed separately, with the serial number printed on the left and the serial number printed on the right side of the bill.
