A solid foothold on the frontier

President Ho Chi Minh once advised: "It is a hundred times easier to endure without people, and a thousand times harder to accomplish with people."

Imbued with Uncle Ho's teachings, in addition to the task of firmly protecting territorial sovereignty and national border security, the Border Guard force of Lang Son province always focuses on caring for and developing the economic life of people in border areas.

IMPROVING PEOPLE'S LIFE

Implementing the consistent viewpoint of "being closely attached to the people, taking the people as the root", with the desire to help people in border areas to get rich and create sustainable livelihoods right on their homeland, over the years, the Border Guard of Lang Son province has built projects and production models, directly guiding and helping people. A typical example is the Pine Forest Planting Project according to Decision No. 661/QD-TTg dated July 29, 1998 of the Prime Minister on the Objectives, Tasks, Policies and Organization of the Implementation of the Project of Planting 5 Million Hectares of New Forests (abbreviated as Program 661) invested by the Border Guard.

After more than 25 years of implementation, the project has greened nearly 4,000 hectares of border land, creating an economic -defense belt stretching over 100 km from the west to the east of the province. Thanks to that, hundreds of households in border communes have had a stable source of income from pine resin exploitation, rising out of poverty, gradually becoming rich on their homeland.

Recalling the time when border guards taught him how to plant forests, Mr. Le Van Than, Trung Khanh commune, Van Lang district, shared: “The soldiers not only provided technical guidance but also persistently encouraged people to plant forests. From a barren land, it has now become a green forest, my family has more income, my children can go to school, and my family has also purchased many valuable items”. Promoting the spirit of innovation, daring to think and dare to do, since March 2021, Ba Son Border Guard Station, Lang Son Provincial Border Guard has launched a program to give yellow camellia seedlings to poor ethnic people in Mau Son commune for sustainable livelihoods.

“The area of Mau Son commune, Cao Loc district has high humidity, which is very suitable for the growth and development of yellow camellia trees. Therefore, the unit has decided to build a planting model to expand among households. Currently, the area of yellow camellia trees planted with seeds supported by the Border Guard is developing well, and people are very excited. The price of yellow camellia buds is currently about 2 million VND/kg dry,” said Lieutenant Colonel Duong Van Hao, Political Commissar of Ba Son Border Guard Station. According to statistics, as of April 25, 2025, the yellow camellia tree planting model in Mau Son commune deployed by Ba Son Border Guard Station has planted 9,820 trees, worth 473.4 million VND. Of which, 1,020 trees are in the border area, 8,800 trees are planted in households.

The cold land of Mau Son has “blossomed”, bringing new hope to the border people in the northeastern highlands. Not only helping people “settle down” on their homeland, in recent times, the Border Guard of Lang Son province has also supported people to “settle down” through the construction of civil works, contributing to improving and enhancing the quality of life in the border area.

With the program "Border Guards join hands to build new countryside", up to now, the Provincial Border Guards have built 69 houses for policy families and poor households; poured 2,300 m2 of concrete yard for cultural houses; repaired 25 classrooms, poured 1,572 m2 of concrete yard for schools; built nearly 87.6 km of rural concrete roads, dredged 2.5 km of canals, six "Lighting up village roads" projects, four bridges for people, one underground over streams, one clean water project, one children's playground; presented 8,280 gifts, 10 health insurance cards, supported five members of the Women's Union to borrow 20 million VND/household; presented 1,172 breeding animals and 1,500 seedlings to poor households...

According to the program to support the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses, up to now, the Provincial Border Guard has supported the construction of 14 houses, with a total cost of 1 billion 692 million VND; of which officers and soldiers supported 667 million VND and 730 working days; accompanying agencies and units supported 240 million VND; families contributed 785 million VND; local people supported 483 working days.

GREEN MILITARY DOCTOR

In addition to the task of maintaining national border security and sovereignty, helping people in the border areas settle down, border guards are also a reliable support for people in primary health care when they are sick. Through the program "Military and civilian medical staff combined in the border area", the military medical force at the Border Guard Stations of Lang Son province regularly coordinates with commune health stations to visit each village and each household to provide health advice, disseminate disease prevention and treatment to local people; mobilize people to bring their relatives to the health station for expanded vaccination; instruct people on disease prevention and environmental protection.

Over the past years, the medical units of the Border Guard force of Lang Son province have examined, treated and provided free medicine to nearly 32,000 people; vaccinated nearly 30,000 children and pregnant women, distributed nearly 16,000 medical masks to people, donated many medical equipment and supplies to local medical facilities; and closely coordinated in disease prevention and control and natural disasters. Receiving the thoughtful and attentive care of the medical officers of the Provincial Border Guard, Ms. Trieu Mui Nay (Mau Son commune, Loc Binh district) emotionally shared: “Before, the medical station was very far away.

Since the arrival of border doctors, we have been examined carefully and given adequate medicine." Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of the Lang Son Provincial Border Guard, said: "Over the past years, the Party Committee and Command of the Lang Son Provincial Border Guard have focused on leading and directing grassroots units to coordinate well with local Party committees and authorities to deploy many meaningful and practical models and programs, contributing to improving the material and spiritual life of people in border areas.

In the coming time, the Border Guard of Lang Son province will continue to innovate its methods of operation, closer to the people, so that each person in the border area is truly a "living milestone", a solid support in the cause of protecting the Fatherland". From warm homes to seeds of crops for livelihood, ... each model and action program brought to the villages has contributed to firmly consolidating the people's hearts, so that the border guards of Lang Son today truly become a solid "support" for people to live in the remote border area.
