Responding to Nikkei, Hana Micron stated that it will transfer equipment to its new factory in Bac Giang to “prepare for production” and is currently busy with customer audits. Bac Giang currently has three suppliers for Apple. Hana Micron is a South Korean company specializing in memory manufacturing and chip packaging.
The chip industry was a key focus of US President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam in September . A joint statement from the two countries identified innovation, including the development of the semiconductor industry, as one of the strategic areas of cooperation.
American companies such as Amkor and Marvell also aim to expand their domestic operations. A few days later, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also visited Nvidia and Synopsys facilities in the United States.
Hana Micron's Human Resources Director, Hwang Chul Min, commented that the Bac Giang project plays a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the region. It will create opportunities to attract more high-tech projects, laying the foundation for the development of a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
A series of recent announcements has given impetus to both Vietnam and global chip manufacturers, who are seeking to diversify their supply chains in the face of geopolitical challenges.
According to the Bac Giang Provincial Electronic Information Portal, the Hana Micron Vina 2 semiconductor manufacturing plant in Van Trung Industrial Park (Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province) has a total investment of nearly 600 million USD on a scale of over 6 hectares.
By 2025, the company plans to increase its total investment to over $1 billion, with projected revenue of $800 million and creating jobs for approximately 4,000 workers. The company will collaborate with the Vietnam-Korea Industrial Technical College for recruitment.
Besides its factory in Bac Giang, Hana Micron also has a factory in Bac Ninh. The company is looking for personnel for IT, production planning, and assembly line worker positions.
Bac Giang will provide electricity, water, and other necessary resources to ensure continuous production at the factory. In addition to the Hana Micron project, the province stated that another semiconductor factory from Taiwan (China) has been inaugurated and is expected to begin operations in 2024.
At the Vietnam Business Summit themed "Connecting Vietnam with the Southeast Asian Semiconductor Industry Ecosystem," Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung stated that Vietnam has significant potential and opportunities to develop its semiconductor industry ecosystem.
Also at the event, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Huy Dung said that the draft Strategy for the Development of Vietnam's Semiconductor Industry until 2030 and Vision to 2035 is being developed, and the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Planning and Investment will soon send the strategy for widespread feedback.
One of the key tasks is to accelerate Vietnam's participation in the regional semiconductor ecosystem, attracting global semiconductor companies to establish a presence and conduct research and development in Vietnam. In particular, there will be preferential mechanisms and government support for the semiconductor industry.
