On October 29, South Korean chip maker SK Hynix announced record profits in the third quarter of 2025 thanks to a sharp increase in demand for artificial intelligence (AI).
SK Hynix - the world's second largest memory chip maker, dominates the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market and is the main chip supplier for US technology group Nvidia.
In the third quarter of 2025, the company's operating profit increased 61.9% year-on-year to a record 11.38 trillion won ($7.9 billion), with an operating profit margin of 47%.
In its earnings statement, SK Hynix said the company achieved its highest-ever quarterly performance thanks to an overall increase in DRAM and NAND memory chip prices, as well as increasing shipments of high-performance products for servers powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
This was the second consecutive quarter that SK Hynix posted record operating profit, rising nearly 70% to a then-high of 9.2 trillion won.
The increase comes after the company announced in October that it had signed partnership agreements with AI giants including OpenAI and Broadcom to supply advanced memory chips.
SK Hynix is seeing "higher-than-expected customer demand" and will aim to expand production lines and accelerate the transition to advanced manufacturing technologies to meet the growing needs of the industry.
SK Hynix Chief Financial Officer Kim Woo Hyun said: "We will continue to strengthen our leadership in AI memory chips by meeting customer needs through market-leading products and differentiated technological capabilities."
