At the annual Inknovation 2025 event, organized by Akishop in collaboration with the Tinh Te Technology Forum in Ho Chi Minh City on December 13th, experts reviewed the development of E-Ink technology over the past year and gained a better understanding of emerging trends.
E-readers are "evolving".
The most prominent trend of 2025 is the widespread adoption of E-Ink color displays with two main technologies: Kaleido 3 and Gallery 3. While Kaleido 3 creates approximately 4,096 colors suitable for reading text and simple illustrations, Gallery 3 displays up to 50,000 colors, ideal for vibrant magazine content.
Amazon surprised everyone by launching the Kindle Scribe Gen 3 just a year after its predecessor, demonstrating the accelerating race in this market segment. The 11-inch device comes in three versions (non-backlit, backlit, and Colorsoft with a Kaleido color display), and for the first time supports color note-taking, integrates AI for summarizing or converting handwriting to text, and allows exporting notes to OneNote, Google Drive, and OneDrive.
In the mobile note-taking device segment, the reMarkable Paper Pro Move stands out with its 7.3-inch E Ink Gallery 3 display. It's one of the pioneering manufacturers to pursue Gallery 3 technology, offering a realistic writing experience similar to printed paper, the ability to display up to 20,000 colors, and a battery life lasting two weeks.
Boox has solidified its position with a diverse range of products, from the Go 7 Color gen 2 supporting Inksense stylus with an improved page-turning button design, the Tab XC with an 8-core CPU and 6GB RAM for multitasking and a new generation Ink Spire stylus with tilt sensor, to the Note Air 5C integrating Talk Inside – allowing for audio recording, live translation, handwritten notes, and AI summarization in one interface.
In addition, the Palma 2 Pro – an upgraded version of the Palma series – features a 6.68-inch Kaleido color display, Inksense stylus support, and upgraded 5G and GPS connectivity, making it a versatile and mobile device.
2025 also marks Akishop's collaboration with Savi to launch two e-readers aimed at Vietnamese consumers as part of a strategy to encourage the habit of reading copyrighted e-books. The Savi 6 has a similar configuration to the Boox Go 6 and comes with the Savi VIP copyrighted book package. Notably, the Savi 6S is positioned as the "national e-reader" with a price under 3 million VND, using a concave screen with a resolution of 212 PPI for greater contrast.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, Sales Manager for the Southern region of Akishop, said that after launching the Savi application late last year, there are now 20,000 registered accounts, and many Vietnamese people abroad are buying books because it is the first application in Vietnam that allows directly sending purchased ebooks to e-readers.
E-Ink is more than just an e-reader.
The recent launch of PocketBook's premium Inkposter Tela digital photo frame is clear evidence that e-ink is no longer limited to e-readers. This 28.5-inch smart frame uses e-ink technology to display interior art, simulating oil paintings or watercolors.
The unique feature of the Tela is its silent display philosophy: no light emission, no heat generation, no backlight, and no blue light. Spectra 6 E-Ink technology delivers significantly sharper colors than Kaleido 3 or Gallery 3.
Despite its slow refresh rate (15-20 seconds), the Tela is incredibly energy-efficient, with a battery life of up to a year. The InkPoster app provides access to thousands of classic masterpieces.
In addition, E-Ink technology is also applied to computer monitors through Dasung's products, providing a solution to protect the eyes of office workers who work long hours.
In summary, 2025 will be the year of the E-Ink boom, as manufacturers not only compete in terms of configuration and AI features on dedicated e-readers, but also expand applications to computer screens and interior design, while shaping E-Ink as a user-friendly and effective educational technology solution.
E-Ink - A technological solution for education
According to Mr. Nguyen The Hung, CEO of Akishop, in the context of digital transformation and the increasingly essential need for AI applications, the education sector requires appropriate technological solutions. E-Ink e-readers are considered a potential option, given that France has banned students from bringing tablets to school, and Taiwan and Hong Kong have integrated e-readers into education.
E-readers overcome the drawbacks of LCD/OLED tablets because E-Ink screens do not emit blue light, preventing eye strain and providing a reading experience similar to printed paper; there are no notifications or entertainment apps to distract attention; and they are energy-efficient, providing 1-2 days of study time without needing to be recharged.
This device also fulfills the entire learning cycle: displaying electronic textbooks, allowing students to take notes, highlight information, and record lectures. The split-screen feature enables simultaneous note-taking and document display. AI applications can analyze note-taking abilities, assess progress through exercises, and build an optimal study plan for each student.
