New motivation

On November 14, 2024, the Hai Duong Provincial People's Council issued Resolution No. 19/2024/NQ-HĐND amending Resolution No. 14/2023/NQ-HĐND dated November 6, 2023, which stipulates the policy to support the development of concentrated commercial agricultural production applying high technology and organic farming until 2025 in the province. Accordingly, the resolution was amended from "support of 100,000 VND/ for greenhouse construction, with support not exceeding 50,000 VND/ /year/entire province" to "support of 100,000 VND/ for greenhouse construction". The estimated budget that can be used to support greenhouse construction in 2024 and 2025 is 76.4 billion VND.

Once allocated, this support will help farmers in the province continue to have the motivation to restore production after typhoon No. 3, and promote the development of high-tech agriculture ... The resolution has made many farmers in the province happy and enthusiastic to invest in greenhouse production.

In the fields of Vinh Due village, Nhat Quang commune (Gia Loc district), new greenhouses are springing up everywhere. After working as a factory worker for a while, Mr. Do Phuong Nam returned to his hometown and boldly invested 1.3 billion VND to build 1.1 acres of greenhouses for growing cantaloupe and cucumbers.

According to La Van Chien, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nhat Quang commune, the resolution of the Provincial People's Council is creating new momentum for farmers to boldly engage in high-tech agriculture.

The entire commune has now developed approximately 10 hectares of greenhouses, an increase of 3 hectares compared to the beginning of this year. Many young workers have boldly left their jobs at factories or opted for overseas employment to stay home and build greenhouses. The development of greenhouses has helped Nhat Quang commune eliminate many abandoned rice fields.

"Developing greenhouse farming areas has helped the commune create a high-tech economic model, meeting criterion number 13 on production organization and rural economic development in the advanced new rural development program," Mr. Chien said proudly.

Having just restored production on 13,000 of greenhouses damaged by Typhoon No. 3, Mr. Nguyen Van Tien in An Khoai village, Tu Cuong commune (Thanh Mien district) has planned to invest in an additional 2,000 - 3,000 of greenhouses next year. Mr. Tien shared: "The province's new support policy has given us the motivation to expand investment. After Typhoon No. 3, four of my family's greenhouses were completely destroyed, almost requiring us to rebuild from scratch. We hope to receive support from the province."

In many other localities in Thanh Mien district, such as Ngu Hung and Chi Lang Nam, many farmers are continuing to invest in developing greenhouses. The district has now developed nearly 54,000 m² of greenhouses, ranking third in the province. Besides economic benefits, these greenhouse models have helped many localities achieve the criteria for production organization in the construction of advanced and model new rural areas.

Great benefits

More and more farmers in Hai Duong are earning higher incomes thanks to expanding the area of vegetable cultivation in greenhouses.

Pham Tran commune (Gia Loc district) has rapidly expanded its greenhouse area from approximately 0.4 hectares (in 2017) to 37 hectares (in 2024).

According to Nguyen Xuan Tho, Chairman of the People's Committee of Pham Tran commune, the cooperative and farmers have collaborated to apply high technology and utilize digital platforms in production management and operation, creating distinctive local OCOP products with high market value... All of this has helped Pham Tran become one of the first three communes in the province to achieve the model new rural standard in production.

Mr. Tran Van Quang from Pham Tran commune has 4 years of experience growing cantaloupe and cucumbers in greenhouses, so he understands the benefits of this model very well. He said that the initial investment is high, but in return, the greenhouse frame can be used for several decades, and the covering material lasts 8-10 years. In a greenhouse, 3-4 crops can be grown per year instead of only 1-2 crops as with traditional farming methods. The price of produce grown in greenhouses is 3-4 times higher than vegetables grown outdoors, the appearance is attractive, and sales are easier. The application of technology in production makes farming less strenuous than before.

Agricultural products grown in greenhouses are less susceptible to pests and diseases, have better quality and appearance, and command higher prices.

Hai Duong province has developed approximately 92 hectares of greenhouses and is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years as the province maintains its policy of encouraging and supporting the development of high-tech agriculture. Studies of various greenhouse models in Ninh Giang and Kim Thanh districts, Kinh Mon town, and Hai Duong city show that the main crops grown in greenhouses are cantaloupe and cucumbers.

Greenhouse farming avoids adverse weather conditions and limits pest and disease outbreaks. Greenhouse and net house production utilizes techniques such as growing plants in pots using substrates, employing drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation technologies, and using ventilation fans to regulate temperature. All of these factors contribute to producing high-yield agricultural products with good appearance, quality, and safety.

Greenhouse farming models contribute to reducing labor costs, lowering expenses, and generating revenue of 1-3 billion VND/hectare/year, 10-30 times higher than rice cultivation and 15 times higher than conventional vegetable farming. The average profit per hectare of greenhouse farming reaches 750 million VND/hectare/year. Hai Duong is currently the leading province in the Red River Delta region in high-tech agricultural production.

Using coconut fiber as the main material for growing cantaloupe and cucumbers in greenhouses contributes to environmental protection.

From a social perspective, greenhouse farming models are creating stable jobs for hundreds of unemployed workers with steady incomes. In the last two years, this production sector has attracted a significant number of young workers. Because it primarily uses coconut fiber and organic fertilizers as raw materials, plants grown in greenhouses are less susceptible to pests and diseases, thus minimizing the use of pesticides.
