The announcement was made by Mr. Gianni Infantino while attending the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings. In addition to FIFA representatives, the event was also attended by senior leaders from the Southeast Asian region.

Mr. Gianni Infantino assessed that the FIFA ASEAN Cup was established to breathe new life into football in the Southeast Asian region. At the same time, this tournament will also serve as a symbol of solidarity of countries in the region through the most popular sport in the world. “The FIFA ASEAN Cup will have an impact not only on Southeast Asia but also on the whole world,” Gianni Infantino told reporters after the signing of a memorandum of understanding on football development between Southeast Asia and FIFA on October 26.

Mr. Gianni Infantino described the signing of the memorandum of understanding between FIFA and 11 Southeast Asian member countries as a very special event for him. The head of FIFA expressed: "11 is a symbolic number in the world of football because each team consists of 11 players. This tournament aims to promote football with the best players within the framework of FIFA Days, to create a real impact not only in the region but also shine around the world. Football brings unity to the world and we are doing that with 11 Southeast Asian countries.

"The FIFA ASEAN Cup will be a great success in the region," Mr. Gianni Infantino emphasized.

In the memorandum of understanding, Mr. Gianni Infantino said the cooperation focuses on several core principles, namely integrity, safety and security for matches. "We want to ensure that football continues to develop in a safe environment and nurtures generations of young people, women and children in the region," Gianni Infantino shared.

During the signing ceremony of the MoU, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said: “Southeast Asian leaders are committed to supporting football - the sport of the people, the youth. I am especially grateful to FIFA for encouraging and supporting us. FIFA has the experience and expertise to share with the young generation, especially the poor in society, urban youth, youth in rural and remote areas. Through the tournament, they can receive encouragement, advantages and support”.
