Under the hot weather, Mr. Phan Van Du in Van Thanh Bac village, Co Dam commune, picked big, round, golden melons to sell. “This year, my family planted melons and watermelons on an area of 1.7 hectares, of which 0.8 hectares are in harvest time. Although this year the melons are not as big as previous years, in return the fruits are even and beautiful, so traders still buy them at high prices. In the past few days, I have harvested more than 1 ton of melons, earning nearly 20 million VND. It is expected that by the end of the melon season, my family will earn about 180 million VND,” Mr. Du shared.

At this time, Mr. Le Van Dong's family in Ky Tay village is also busy harvesting melons and pears on an area of 4 sao. Notably, this year, he has experimented with planting 1 sao of Korean yellow pear melon. Mr. Dong said: In addition to traditional pear varieties, this year, I boldly invested in planting Korean pear melon varieties to diversify agricultural products and increase income. Thanks to buying good varieties and ensuring technical care, this type of melon has an estimated yield of nearly 8 quintals/sao. Korean melons have a rich sweet taste, so they are popular with customers. He has currently sold 3 quintals at a price of 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg.
The weather is hot and demand is high, so households are actively harvesting ripe melons to bring them to market in time. After harvesting, people choose large, beautiful fruits to import wholesale to traders, mainly in Vinh City (Nghe An). In addition, people sell directly to passersby and bring them to local markets in the district. Currently, melons and pears have quite good prices, averaging 20,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, an increase of 5,000 VND compared to the same period last year.

According to local people, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and watermelon are short-term crops that are easy to grow and require little care, and are very suitable for the local soil and climate. These melons will be harvested 50-65 days after planting. To facilitate care and consumption, local households often plant in several batches. Therefore, the harvest can be spread out from May to early July to meet market demand during the hot summer.

The first crop of melons of the year was strictly followed by farmers following technical procedures; investing in care and proper fertilization, so it grew well, had few pests and diseases, and had high fruit set. Overall, it is estimated that each sao of melons will yield about 1.1 tons, and 1.3 tons of cantaloupe. Watermelon alone is estimated to yield nearly 2 tons/sao, but it will be more than a week before harvest.
On hot summer days, melon is a highly consumed fruit, both cooling and improving health. Therefore, Co Dam melon products are always favored by customers because of their delicious, fragrant, juicy taste, ensuring food hygiene and safety...

Mr. Tran Trong Quy - Vice Chairman of Co Dam Commune People's Committee said: Co Dam is a land with a long tradition of growing melons. In recent years, people have not only expanded the area of melons but also added varieties of melons and watermelons to grow. Compared to dry crops such as corn, peanuts, etc., melons bring 3 times higher income. The whole commune currently has more than 35 hectares of melons, an increase of 10 hectares compared to last year, contributing to increasing income and improving the lives of many households.
This year, the first melons of the season had stable yields and good prices, making melon growers in Co Dam extremely excited. After the harvest, farmers continued to invest effort and fertilizer to take good care of the next melon crops with the expectation of favorable weather, stable yields and prices, bringing a comprehensive melon crop victory.
