Unlike the round shape of Vietnamese melons, the Korean golden melon imported to Vietnam through official channels has a long, slender shape, golden skin, ivory white flesh, and can be eaten with the seeds. Each fruit weighs 180-220 grams and is sold for 99,000 VND, equivalent to 400,000 VND per kilogram.
At the Korean melon festival held in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Cho Sung Bae, Head of the aT Center Ho Chi Minh City Representative Office (under the Korean Ministry of Agriculture) said that Vietnam is a potential market and a strong consumer of high-end Korean agricultural products.
In the first three months of the year, Vietnam spent $15 million importing fruits and vegetables from South Korea, up 6% over the same period last year. Apples, grapes, and strawberries are the most popular items.
As for golden melons, Korea has exported 10 tons to Vietnam since early March. "We have seen enthusiastic reception from Vietnamese consumers and expect export volume to continue to increase," said Mr. Cho Sung Bae.
