On the club's official website, Bayer Leverkusen announced the dismissal of coach Erik ten Hag, with the decision taking effect immediately.

The Dutch coach's loss of his job after only two matches in charge of Leverkusen in the Bundesliga is shocking.

Bild newspaper said that the decision to fire Erik ten Hag was made by the Bundesliga club's leadership on Sunday (August 31) and an official announcement was made today (September 1).

Assistant coach Rogier Meijer was entrusted by Leverkusen to lead the team's training sessions, before the club finds a new captain.

The reason Erik ten Hag lost his job after only 2 matches (lost 1, drew 1), according to sports director, Simon Rolfes, is that although this was " not an easy decision " and "no one wanted to go to this step ", Leverkusen felt that the plan to build a successful squad that the former MU captain implemented was " not feasible ". They believe that with the squad they have, Leverkusen will do much better.

Coach Erik ten Hag was appointed by Leverkusen to replace Xabi Alonso (who moved to Real Madrid), ahead of the 2025/26 season. Previously, Erik ten Hag was fired by MU in October last year, after 2.5 years in charge of the team with many poor results.

The 2024 Bundesliga champions won Erik ten Hag's debut in the German Cup, but lost on the opening day of the 2025/26 Bundesliga and were most recently held to a 3-3 draw by 10-man Werder Bremen despite leading 3-1.

Leverkusen experienced major turmoil in the summer, not only losing captain Xabi Alonso but also saying goodbye to a number of key players, such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah,...

While MU has had a difficult first few weeks of the new season, their former players - coincidentally - have all lost their jobs. In just the past few days, Solskjaer (fired by Besiktas), then Mourinho (received bitter fruit at Fenerbahce) and now Erik ten Hag.
