On the road leading to U Minh Ha National Park , many people know Mr. Vo Thanh Quoc as a "lucky farmer" with the bitter melon growing model. After more than 10 years of working in rice fields and shrimp farms, he has accumulated a lot of experience, knowing how to harmoniously combine nature and modern techniques. "You can grow bitter melon, squash or luffa, the important thing is to know how to make use of the land and follow the technical process," he said, while quickly tying ropes to the green bitter melon trellis.
Mr. Quoc's bitter melon is grown organically, ensuring safety, so it is favored by traders.
On the square bank of more than 500 meters, the bitter melon trellis is green and pleasing to the eye. Mr. Quoc said that when the weather is favorable, he harvests once every two days, picking hundreds of kilos each time, with the selling price ranging from 10,000 to 14,000 VND/kg. "As long as you are diligent, you will have a steady income. Today, I picked more than 150 kilos, after deducting expenses, I still have a decent profit," he happily shared.

What is valuable about Mr. Quoc is his safe, environmentally friendly farming mindset. Since the locality has promoted the ecological farming model, he has completely switched to using biological pesticides and composting fish manure from catfish, miscellaneous fish, or bitter melons with worms to make fertilizer. “It is very effective, the plants are healthy, the fruit is beautiful, and the cost of fertilizer is significantly reduced,” he said. Thanks to that, his bitter melons retain their natural green color, are crispy, have few pests, and are favored by traders.

In addition to growing bitter melon, Mr. Quoc also grows pumpkin, squash, and gourd on the canal bank, both to prevent soil erosion and to increase income. At the same time, he has developed a combined rice-shrimp-crab model, bringing high economic efficiency. On average, each year, he earns about 100 million VND from rice-shrimp-crab and 60 million VND from crops, bringing the total average income to 160 million VND/year, an impressive figure for a farming household in a remote area.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Ril, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Khanh An Commune, commented: "The movement of good farmers in production and business is showing clear results. People in the commune know how to take advantage of land and combine reasonable farming. Many households have boldly switched to organic production, both increasing productivity and protecting the environment. Mr. Vo Thanh Quoc is a typical farmer in this movement."
From the square banks overgrown with weeds, Mr. Quoc has turned them into lush green flower gardens, contributing to the beauty of Khanh An's new rural picture. Local people often say jokingly: "Farming like Mr. Quoc is profitable, meaningful and far-reaching."
