Reports say the device will use wireless charging and data transfer technology, with a screen designed to hide the front camera and Face ID components. According to Bloomberg expert Mark Gurman, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to kick off this design revolution this year.
An idea for the future iPhone
In his report, Gurman said Apple is planning to remove the USB-C port that is currently standard on its products, creating a completely portless iPhone. This is in line with Apple, which is known for controversial design decisions that are later supported, most notably the removal of the headphone jack to help Apple develop the iPhone X with an all-screen design.
Apple remains cautious with portless iPhone
The problem is that Apple is being cautious with this plan due to concerns about facing legal pressure from the European Union (EU), which has required manufacturers to use USB-C ports through a new law. However, the good news for Apple is that a new report from 9to5Mac says that the EU has confirmed that current laws do not prevent Apple from launching a portless iPhone.
Apple launches iPhone 16 with integrated AI software
Sharing with the press, European Commission (EC) representative Federica Miccoli said: "This device does not need to incorporate a wired charging solution because it cannot be recharged in this way itself."
Due to its caution, Apple has not been able to bring a portless iPhone to the market, which means the upcoming iPhone 17 Air will have a USB-C port and MagSafe charging. The launch date of the portless iPhone is still unknown, while the under-screen Face ID technology will probably only appear on the iPhone 18 models released next year.
