Old routers that are no longer supported by their manufacturers are becoming targets for bad guys, the FBI said in a recent alert. Without regular patches or software updates, outdated devices become especially vulnerable, allowing hackers to gain remote access and install malware.

The FBI warning emphasizes that routers come pre-installed with remote administration software that bad guys know how to break into.

Once infiltrated, they can install malware or set up botnets – groups of Internet-connected devices that are compromised and controlled by a third party and used for activities such as data theft, spamming, and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Hackers can also use compromised devices to sell proxy services to shady entities to hide their location and identity.

Notably, all 13 of the names on the list are routers from Linksys, one of the popular home networking equipment suppliers in the 2000s and 2010s. They are: E100, E300, E1000, E1200, E1500, E1550, E2500, E3200, E4200, WRT320N, WRT610N, M10 and WRT310N.

The FBI explained that the remote administration feature built into the router is the main source of risk. Cybercriminals are familiar with accessing outdated management software, installing their own software to access the device even when it is password protected.

Because the malware is installed on the router, the FBI says it can be difficult for users to know when something is wrong. If you have one of these routers, it’s best to replace it with a newer model that’s new enough to receive regular software updates.

Users can also disable remote administration and reboot the router, the FBI recommends.
