How big of an influence does G-Dragon have on Korean and Asian fashion?

Returning to Vietnam after 13 years, G-Dragon quickly attracted special attention from the fan community. The Korean male idol will perform at My Dinh National Stadium ( Hanoi ) on June 21.

As the leader of the famous boy band Big Bang for nearly two decades, G-Dragon is admired by the public for his musical talent and has become a fashion icon with wide influence throughout Asia.

Changing the relationship between Kpop and high fashion

From the early years of his career, G-Dragon has expressed his personality through fashion. Unlike most Asian artists who often choose safe outfits, he pursues a different style of dressing such as layering, bold accessories and gender-neutral.

It was this style that helped G-Dragon solidify his title as a "gender-fluid fashion icon" and was followed by many Kpop idols later on. His style is not limited to a fixed pattern but constantly changes boldly from unique designs to items with a strong personal touch.

Thanks to his liberal aesthetic and flexible coordination ability, he always attracts attention in the front row of major fashion shows. G-Dragon has become an icon in front of the media lens when appearing in the front row at Chanel and many international shows since 2012.

Sharing with System Magazine , stylist KB Lee: "The relationship between Kpop idols and luxury brands has completely changed after G-Dragon joined Chanel. He was the first factor to bring Kpop artists to the front row at high-end fashion shows."

Not stopping there, G-Dragon appeared in Chanel's Gabrielle bag promotion campaign in 2017, contributing to conveying the image of genderless fashion to the global public.

After that, the Big Bang leader continuously appeared at Chanel shows from Dallas (USA) to Grand Palais (France). This year's black and white tweed coat outfit and mint green hair were described by the Korean press as "The representative face of Chanel".

G-Dragon doesn't just wear designer clothes, he makes each item iconic. Bouclé, a feminine material, comes alive on his body, inspiring new men's fashion at major fashion houses.

"King" of trendsetters, Asian fashion icon

With the ability to sell out, G-Dragon not only wears designer clothes but also makes everything he touches a collectible. From shoes, jackets to jewelry, everything quickly sells out within hours of release.

Few people know that G-Dragon is the first Asian artist to sign a global collaboration contract with sports brand Nike, opening an important turning point in the relationship between the Kpop wave and sports shoe fashion.

The Air Force 1 "Para-Noise" version designed by G-Dragon created a fever as soon as it was released. Within minutes of going on sale, all products in more than 40 countries were sold out.

The first version released in 2019, includes 3 models: White colorway for the international market, red colorway exclusively for Korea and a limited yellow version only given to close friends of the male artist.

Accordingly, the limited edition of only 88 pairs for friends of the leader of the famous boy band Big Bang was resold for more than 32,000 USD (about 836 million VND).

Not stopping at just one shoe line, G-Dragon continued to launch Kwondo 1 (2021) and the "Panda" remix (2023), while introducing a collection inspired by Taekwondo - blending traditional Korean culture with modern aesthetics.

Before making his mark with Nike, G-Dragon had a series of notable collaborations in the fashion and design industry. From 2013 to 2016, he collaborated with Ambush (Tokyo, Japan) to launch a limited product line of leather jerseys and accessories that were full of his personal style.

In 2014, he collaborated with Chow Tai Fook (Hong Kong, China) for his own jewelry collection. In 2015, he launched a genderless shoe line with Giuseppe Zanotti - at a time when the concept was still quite new.

In 2016, the 8 Seconds brand of Samsung C&T Fashion Group also invited G-Dragon to design 3 street fashion collections, regardless of gender, quickly attracting strong interest from young people in Korea.

Special projects such as the PEACEMINUSONE x Vogue pop-up store in Seoul (Korea) and collaboration with Colette (Paris, France) in 2017 continue to affirm his international fashion position.

Not only limited to music or fashion, in 2023, G-Dragon also became the global ambassador of the BMW XM car line, demonstrating his influence beyond the framework of popular art.

Vogue magazine once compared G-Dragon to a "harmony between music and fashion" with the ability to flexibly combine American hip hop style, Korean street fashion and European luxury spirit.

It is this unique cultural exchange that has helped Too Bad's singer shape the image of an artist who is both international in stature and still retains his identity. In the flow of world fashion, the name G-Dragon deserves to be the modern "king of Asian fashion".
