According to a report by data research firm Metric, in the first quarter of this year, more than 38,000 stores on platforms e-commerce In Vietnam, no orders were recorded.
However, the group of stores with high sales grew strongly, especially the group with sales of over 50 billion VND, which nearly doubled (95%) compared to the first quarter of last year. This reflects the withdrawal of small retail stores, giving way to large retailers with superior scale and operational capacity. Consumers are gradually switching to genuine stores (Mall shops). Although accounting for only 3% of the total number of stores, Mall shops contributed to 26.7% of total sales.
This report also shows that imported goods are currently becoming a pressure for domestic sellers on e-commerce platforms.
Citing Shopee, in the first quarter of 2025, the imported goods group achieved sales of 3.6 trillion VND with more than 80 million products sold, an increase of 12.2% in sales and nearly 7.2% in output over the same period.
"Although accounting for only 5.9% of the total market share, this group still attracts customers thanks to its low prices, diverse designs and suitability to domestic customers' needs. The average value of each product is only about 45,000 VND, showing that users prefer to buy in large quantities at low costs" - Metric.vn assessed.
However, the representative of Metric.vn also pointed out: The above trend has been creating great competitive pressure for domestic sellers, especially in the popular product segment. At the same time, it poses a greater competitive challenge for domestic sellers, forcing them to improve quality and have a pricing strategy.
Therefore, this person believes that in the above context, advantages in delivery speed and understanding the market will be key factors that can help domestic sellers maintain market share.
Metric.vn also forecasts that in the second quarter of 2025, sales on e-commerce platforms will continue to grow to about 116.6 trillion VND, thanks to positive signs in online consumer behavior of Vietnamese people.
