Nearly 9,300 billion VND to upgrade three national highways in the Mekong Delta

VnExpressVnExpress25/03/2024

The Ministry of Transport has just proposed the Prime Minister to approve the policy of upgrading three national highways 53, 62, and 91B to meet grade 3 road standards, with a total investment of VND9,297 billion.

Specifically, National Highway 62 in Long An province, starting point at the intersection with Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway, expected end point in Kien Tuong town, length about 69 km.

National Highway 53 in Vinh Long and Tra Vinh provinces, including Nga Tu bridge and Long Ho - Ba Si section, starting point in Long Ho district, expected end point in Cang Long district, Tra Vinh province, length about 41 km.

National Highway 91B is located in Can Tho City and the provinces of Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, with the starting point planned at the Can Tho Bridge intersection and the end point in Bac Lieu City, with a length of about 141 km.

All three national highways have been upgraded and renovated to meet the standards of a grade 3 plain road, with a design speed of 80 km/h, a 12 m wide roadbed, an 11 m wide road surface including two lanes for motor vehicles, two lanes for non-motor vehicles and a shoulder. Some sections through urban areas that have met the width will be renovated and upgraded.

The project will be implemented for 4 years from the date of capital allocation, expected from 2024 to 2027.

The total preliminary investment of the three projects is VND9,297 billion. Of which, National Highway 53 is VND2,601 billion, National Highway 62 is VND3,241 billion and National Highway 91B is VND3,454 billion.

The project is invested by the Ministry of Transport, with an expected loan of about 6,385 billion VND from the World Bank, including construction costs, pre-tax equipment, construction supervision consulting costs... The counterpart capital of the Vietnamese Government is about 2,911 billion VND for project management, construction investment consulting, site clearance, and contingency costs.

National Highways 52, 62 and 91B are located in different areas, so the Ministry of Transport proposed to split them into three component projects. Each route can be operated independently after being upgraded, regardless of the progress of the remaining national highways.

Once completed, the project will gradually complete the road traffic network connecting provinces and cities, contributing to promoting socio-economic development and ensuring national defense and security in the Mekong Delta region.

National Highway 53, the section passing through Vinh Long province, is seriously degraded. At times, high tides cause serious flooding, affecting people's travel and causing traffic accidents.

National Highway 62 passing through Long An has been used for more than 20 years, the road surface is narrow and degraded, meeting the standards of a level 4 plain road, except for sections passing through urban areas that are invested according to urban scale.

National Highway 91B (South of Hau River) has been in operation since 2011 and has now deteriorated. In particular, the section passing through Soc Trang province is frequently flooded and has many potholes, posing a danger to road users.
