Director of the Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve Management Board Bach Thanh Hai said that Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve is located in the southwest of Le Thuy district with an area of over 22,000 hectares of evergreen tropical primeval forest in the vast Central Truong Son ecological region of about 500,000 hectares. This is a rare place that preserves an area of evergreen tropical forest on lowland mountains, with a diverse and rich flora and fauna and is assessed by the World Wildlife Fund as one of the 200 centers of high biodiversity resources globally.
“With such characteristics, in 2020, right after the establishment of the Management Board, we always identified biodiversity conservation associated with the development of ecotourism services as one of the four key tasks of the unit; at the same time, it is an important strategy to promote the potential, advantages, and value of biodiversity resources of the KDTN, contributing to improving financial autonomy, income for workers and supporting forest protection, solving jobs and livelihoods for local people…”, said the Director of the Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong KDTN Management Board.

It is known that in recent years, the Management Board of Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve has actively coordinated closely with international organizations, such as: Vietnam Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation Project (VFBC); Fauna and Flora Conservation International (FFI); United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to implement conservation activities in the Nature Reserve, such as: Completing the assessment of METT and COPS tools; collecting camera traps and synthesizing image data; assessing the current status of wildlife; applying SMART Mobile tools to patrol and monitor forest and biodiversity protection; developing and implementing a sustainable forest management plan for the period 2021-2025 with a vision to 2030...
In addition, the Management Board also cooperates with the Viet Nature Conservation Center (Viet Nature) to implement a technical support program for forest protection and biodiversity; monitor impact routes, set camera traps to monitor biodiversity of the indicator species crested pheasant and siki gibbon at Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve.
In particular, the use of camera traps has recorded the presence of many rare animals, such as: red-shanked douc langur, siki gibbon, white pheasant, golden monkey, red-faced monkey, crested pheasant, black bear, box turtle, striped rabbit and binturong. This is important data as a basis for the Management Board to develop a species population conservation plan for the period 2026-2030.
“In 2024, the Provincial People's Committee approved the project for ecotourism, resort and entertainment of Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong National Park for the period 2024-2030. This is an important legal basis for the unit to implement the ecotourism development plan for the period 2025-2030. Thereby, contributing to creating jobs, bringing sustainable income, improving the material and spiritual life of the people; at the same time, raising awareness and responsibility of local people for the conservation of wild animals and plants...", the Director of Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong National Park Management Board informed.
In addition to its high biodiversity, Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong National Park is also known for its majestic and beautiful system of hills, streams and waterfalls, which are very suitable for developing various types of eco-tourism and experiential tourism. Identifying that potential and advantage, in recent years, the Management Board has cooperated with Netin Company Limited and the VFBC project to deploy a pilot tourism product " Discovering Khe Nuoc Trong, Suoi Tien and conquering Cong Troi and Bai Dan waterfalls".
“In the process of exploiting tourism products, the Management Board has coordinated with relevant units and organizations to support the construction of homestays; consolidate and enhance the local culinary culture; and provide tourism training for the buffer zone community. This is the premise for the development of community-based ecotourism activities in the Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong National Park…”, the Director of the Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong National Park Management Board shared.
Along with supporting people in the buffer zone to develop community-based ecotourism, implementing the target program for sustainable forestry development; funding to support the development of agricultural production, rural economy and fisheries; provisional revenue from the agreement on payment for greenhouse gas emission reduction in the North Central region, the Management Board has supported the livelihoods of the buffer zone communities of Kim Thuy and Lam Thuy communes with 24 cow raising models; 2 goat raising models; 44 pig raising models, bringing benefits to 155 households.
In addition, more than 500 households in the buffer zone were assigned to protect nearly 17,000 hectares of forest, with a total support budget of over VND8.1 billion. These activities not only improve people's lives but also raise awareness of the role of forests and biodiversity conservation...
