Meritorious Artist Xuan Nam on stage at the age of 80 |
After returning from the exchange in Ha Tinh , Meritorious Artist Xuan Nam talked to me in a small house in alley 86 Nguyen An Ninh street (Ward 7, Vung Tau City). She sat looking at the photos taken with the leaders of the Party and State, and the memories of her youth were still clearly visible in her old eyes.
Her hometown is Thach Ha (Ha Tinh City). At the age of 20, Xuan Nam joined the local art troupe. During the period when the American war of destruction spread throughout the North, the young girl carried a backpack, held a kerosene lamp, and carried a mobile stage on her back... enthusiastically going to the battlefields, using her "singing to drown out the sound of bombs". For her, that was the most glorious time. Xuan Nam and her colleagues had to walk, climb mountains and wade through streams hundreds of kilometers from the construction site 21-22 of the youth volunteers to Khe Sanh, Highway 9 in Southern Laos... The stage was a trench, the stage lights were flares, bombs and bullets were everywhere, but they still sang with all their hearts to fuel the fighting spirit of the troops.
In 1965, artist Xuan Nam participated in the Northern Anti-American Singing and Dance Festival in Hanoi . She was invited to the Presidential Palace to recite the poem “Celebrating the Victory of the Homeland” by poet Duy Thao, then sang the ballad “The Thunder God Falls” by author Le Thanh Binh for Uncle Ho and Prime Minister Pham Van Dong to listen. “That is a great honor for an artist like me,” she said proudly.
Meritorious Artist Xuan Nam was the one who initiated the bringing of Nghe Tinh folk songs such as Ho, Ve, Vi, and Dam to the professional stage. She also refined Vi Giam melodies to create “Nghe poetry recitation”, a new type of poetry recitation with a strong local character.
In 2003, leaving Ha Tinh, she chose Vung Tau City for her children to start a career and to live in when she retired. Her five children all inherited the artistic bloodline, pursuing careers related to music . In Vung Tau, she still travels everywhere to perform art, participate in talks about marriage and family happiness, as well as enthusiastically contribute to local cultural and artistic activities.
In recent years, due to her old age and poor health, she has limited her participation in art programs or exchange meetings. Although she is 81 years old, her voice in singing folk songs and Vi Giam is still sweet and rich. “The stage lights always make me sublime. Until now, I still don’t understand why every time I step on stage, I can talk, speak eloquently, improvise poems and folk songs fluently. I also compose my own poems and tell stories to make the audience laugh a lot. When I go on stage, I feel like I am young again,” Meritorious Artist Xuan Nam shared.
