Minimize risk and increase productivity with contactless pig farming model

According to information from the Environmental Agriculture newspaper, the contactless pig farming model, focusing on controlling the source of disease from the beginning, is being effectively implemented by many households in Tuyen Quang, contributing to protecting the health of the pig herd.

The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham in Tan Trao village, Tan Thanh commune, Tuyen Quang province is one of the first households to apply this farming model for their pig herd.

Ms. Tham shared that, in recent years, whenever an epidemic broke out, almost the entire village suffered heavy losses. Many households lost hundreds, even thousands of pigs. For farmers, each epidemic was a big shock, causing them to lose all their capital and effort. Therefore, when the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries implemented a contactless farming model, she quickly registered to participate.

With a herd of nearly 100 pigs, her family has renovated the barn, set up fences and created separate areas to minimize contact between pigs and humans, other animals and objects that may carry pathogens. All tools, food and vehicles are carefully disinfected. The barn is covered with nets, periodically sprayed with disinfectants, and the quality of water and food is controlled.

Although initially applying the model encountered many difficulties, but now, when seeing the pigs growing healthy and eating well while many other households are still facing difficulties, Ms. Tham feels that all her efforts are completely worth it. Up to now, her family's pigs have stabilized and are ready to sell, promising a successful farming season.

In Truong Sinh commune, Mrs. Tran Thi Hoa Dung in Phu Thinh village also experienced heavy losses due to the epidemic. Mrs. Dung regularly maintained a herd of more than 100 commercial pigs and 20 sows, but during the recent outbreak of African swine fever, her entire herd was infected and had to be destroyed.
