Nghia Loc community takes action to deal with pollution from pig farming

The Agriculture and Environment Newspaper reported that the prolonged pollution from pig farms in Nghia Loc commune, Nghe An has severely affected the lives of nearby residents.

Nghia Loc commune was formed from the merger of two old communes Nghia Long and Nghia Loc of Nghia Dan district. Although a new administrative management model has been applied, environmental problems caused by pig farming have not been thoroughly resolved, partly stemming from previous lax management.

Some farms and households were named by the people. Notably, a large-scale livestock farm in the upstream of Khe Sai 2 hamlet, legally registered under the name of Mr. Vu Dinh Huan, residing in Dap Danh hamlet, Nghia Loc commune.

Local residents said their daily lives have been disrupted since the facility opened. Rain or shine, day or night, they are constantly worried about the stench and the risk of pollution.

“The information we have shows that Mr. Huan is only the legal owner, the facility has been transferred many times. Whoever operates it must strictly comply with the law, and cannot put profit above the interests of the community. The pollution has lasted for many years, we have reported it many times but there has been no radical solution. As long as the facility is still operating, people will have to endure it. The stench is terrible, not to mention the overflowing wastewater that accumulates over time and seeps into the soil and water sources, which is extremely harmful,” said Ms. LTP, a resident of Khe Sai 2 hamlet.

Regarding this facility, on March 1, 2017, Nghia Dan District People's Committee issued Construction Permit No. 15/GPXD-UBND to Mr. Vu Dinh Huan, allowing the construction of a pig farm in Khe Sai 2 hamlet on an area of over 13,871 m², including two pig barns.
