As a vital route connecting the center of Lao Cai province with the IC 12 intersection of Noi Bai - Lao Cai highway, after nearly a decade of operation, the route has degraded, affecting urban aesthetics and traffic safety. Faced with this situation, Lao Cai province has approved the Au Co road upgrade project to ensure infrastructure, serving sustainable socio -economic development.
According to the approval decision, the project to upgrade the Au Co road surface will be implemented from Km5+300 to Km10+500, passing through Yen Bai , Van Phu and Au Lau wards, with a total investment of 60 billion VND. The completion time according to the contract is before February 28, 2026.
The project includes the following items: scraping and treating damaged, cracked, and sunken road surfaces; paving asphalt concrete; treating the roadbed in rubber areas, restoring the gravel roadbed structure; organizing asphalt concrete joints at intersections and IC12 interchanges to ensure smooth and safe traffic. In addition, the traffic safety system, drainage ditches, signs, road markings, etc. are also replaced and supplemented synchronously.

Mr. Le Quang Tuan - Deputy Head of Inspection and Supervision Department, Road Maintenance Management Board (Department of Construction of Lao Cai province) said: "The contractor selection process is carried out carefully, with priority criteria on capacity, experience, ability to mobilize equipment and human resources to ensure the progress and quality of the project. Construction units and supervision consultants are responsible for close coordination, continuous supervision, and timely handling of arising problems during the implementation process".
Although the construction conditions encountered many difficulties due to heavy rain, especially the impact of storms No. 10 and 11, while the route still had to be maintained, the contractor made every effort to overcome them to ensure progress. The contractor increased machinery, divided shifts reasonably, and took advantage of favorable weather conditions to carry out the construction, ensuring the volume was completed according to plan.
Mr. Doan Van Hoanh - Construction site commander, Yen Bai Traffic Construction Joint Stock Company, Lao Cai province said: "To speed up the progress, the unit has increased machinery and equipment, mobilized maximum human resources to work in shifts. Workers are divided into two groups, making the most of favorable weather, working overtime when possible."

Along with that, technical supervision work is strictly carried out. The supervision consultant unit is regularly present at the construction site, coordinating with the contractor and investor to check and evaluate the quality of each item, ensuring compliance with technical standards, labor safety and environmental hygiene.
According to the contract, the project must be completed by February 28, 2026, but the investor requires the contractor to complete the project by the end of this year, two months ahead of schedule. The early completion of the project is important, meeting the socio-economic development requirements of the locality.
Mr. Le Quang Tuan - Deputy Head of the Inspection and Supervision Department, Road Maintenance Management Board (Department of Construction of Lao Cai province) said: "The construction process has many advantages due to no obstacles in terms of site clearance, weather conditions and material transportation... We have directed the contractor to speed up the construction progress, mobilize maximum resources to put the project into safe and effective operation in 2025".

The Au Co road upgrade project not only contributes to completing the province's traffic system in a synchronous and modern direction, but also serves as a strategic connection axis between the central urban area and Tran Yen Industrial Park, the Southern Industrial Park and neighboring areas. This is considered the "backbone" to expand urban space, creating a driving force to attract investment, develop services and trade.
Having lived along the road for many years, Mr. Nguyen The Duong, from Binh Tra residential group, Au Lau ward, happily shared: “In the past, the degraded road caused many inconveniences, especially when traffic volume increased. Now that it has been upgraded, the road is wider and smoother, making people's travel, transporting goods and trading more convenient and safer.”
The upgraded Au Co route connecting with IC12 Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway not only expands the urban development space but also contributes to Lao Cai province soon completing the goal of becoming a dynamic growth pole, a center of international economic trade connection, developing in the direction of "green, harmony, identity, happiness".
