Faced with the complicated developments of storm No. 13 (international name: Kalmaegi), on November 5, the Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai province issued an official dispatch requesting educational institutions in the area to proactively let students stay home from school to ensure the safety of students, teachers, school staff and the community.

Specifically, the Department of Education and Training requires all educational institutions in 58 communes and wards in the east of Gia Lai province (the area that belonged to Binh Dinh province before the merger) to let students stay home from the afternoon of November 5 to the end of November 7. For 77 communes and wards in the west of Gia Lai province (the old Gia Lai area), depending on the weather, floods and storms, schools will proactively decide to let students stay home to ensure safety.

In particular, localities in the eastern and southeastern regions of Gia Lai province before the merger, including Dak Po, An Khe, Kong Chro, Kbang, Phu Thien, Ia Pa, Krong Pa and Ayun Pa town, were required to urgently implement a plan to stop school from the afternoon of November 5 to the end of November 7.

During the school break, school principals must closely monitor the weather, instruct teachers, students and parents not to travel to dangerous areas, and implement measures to ensure safety for themselves and their families. Schools need to reinforce and secure their facilities, ensure the safety of property and teaching equipment. In particular, schools are required to be ready to coordinate with local authorities to become evacuation points when necessary.

Director of the Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai province, Pham Van Nam, emphasized: “The direction of the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee is to ensure absolute safety for students and teachers. We must not be subjective or negligent, but must proactively respond to all situations that may arise when the storm hits. Letting students stay home from school is necessary and appropriate to avoid unfortunate risks.”

In addition to allowing students to stay home from school, the Department also requires schools to urgently overcome the consequences of natural disasters after the storm, ensure environmental sanitation, prevent epidemics, stabilize teaching and learning, and avoid affecting the 2025-2026 school year plan. Educational institutions are responsible for reporting the number of students absent from school, the status of affected facilities and other damages to the Department of Education and Training Office before 5:00 p.m. every day for synthesis and reporting to the Provincial People's Committee and the Ministry of Education and Training .

The initiative to let students stay home from school is not only a timely response measure, appropriate to the actual situation, but also demonstrates the high sense of responsibility of the Gia Lai province education sector in protecting the health and lives of students, teachers and the community. Thereby, contributing with the entire political system of Gia Lai province to effectively carry out the work of preventing and combating natural disasters and adapting to climate change in accordance with the direction of the Party, the Government and the central ministries and branches.
