According to The Nation, Cambodia’s General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) has ordered increased inspections and random sampling of durians imported through border gates to detect toxic chemicals, especially illegal ripening agents. The samples will be sent to the Department of Consumer Protection, Competition and Anti-Fraud (CCF) for analysis, and the offending shipment will be immediately confiscated. The move comes amid concerns that durians imported from neighboring countries, including Vietnam, may contain unauthorized chemicals, posing a health risk to consumers.
The tightening of inspections in Cambodia comes as Vietnam is also cracking down on chemical-related violations. On May 9, 2025, authorities in Dak Lak province busted a ring illegally using chemicals to ripen durian, confiscating nearly $4 million worth of chemicals and prosecuting two individuals.
